Another Post Asking For Sewing Machine Recs

I got $300 as a gift to buy a new sewing machine today!  I was thinking of a serger, but after getting some great suggestions from the Crafts board to just get a sewing machine that has an overlock/overcast stitch since I really don't sew clothes THAT much.

Does anyone have a recommendation for me?  I am a beginner for sure right now, but hope to learn more over the next year and ultimately want to make my own baby clothes along with the cloth wipes/tote bags/unpaper towels I current make and sell.   So a machine that's easy for a beginner to use but also one I can grow into over a few years would be great!   Preferably within my $300 budget since money is tight right now.  I know that limits me, but I can hope.  :)

  • I have this machine.

There is a learning curve to all its features but I've been very pleased with the manual and it has a lot of great features (quilts, embroiders and has a few overlock/overcast stitches).

Also, in general I find stuff like printers and sewing machines on ebay and get great deals that way.  Just watch out for the shipping costs.  But I definitely rec that as a great source for cheaper electronics!  I got this machine for around $300, maybe slightly more including shipping and it was at least $100 off list price!

  • I have THIS Brother.  I've had it since Mother's Day but just started using it and absolutely LOVE it! It's super easy and Amazon has it for a fabulous price!!!

My only complaint so far is that the automatic threading thing doesn't seem to work (or I'm doing it incorrectly?!) for me.

    Otherwise, it's really fun.

  • Ooh, those both look great!  I'm going to go into a shop and play around on Monday.  I can't wait!
  • I too have a Brother machine, I just don't know what model it is - came from Costco on Black Friday a few years back. Works great & I definitely recommend the brand.
  • I have a Kenmore from Sears and I love it.  I have had it for 15 years (omg!) since I was 12 and it has served my purposes from beginner to... older beginner.  I use it primarily for mending and small crafts but it is sturdy, portable and dependable.  I brought it to the school I teach at and knocked out 25 angel costumes last year.  All of the more experienced women there liked the machine and it didn't have any problems with the silky or fuzzy materials.
  • Here is a link to the Kenmore machines.   I have the $250 computerized version there are also 150 and 213$ options. Thank you for getting my mind on sewing, now I think I need their serger...

  • I have a Kenmore machine - my sister bought it for me so I think it's the cheapest version they have but I really like it.  I grew up with Kenmore and Singer machines and I know the Kenmore one I had in middle school was still kicking and working great when I moved back home right after college after sitting around collecting dust for years.
