December 12th was our due date. It came and went and we were literally sitting on pins and needles waiting for DS to come. The morning of the 15th (our wedding anniversary) I started having regular contractions. The ironic thing is I was scheduled to be induced the evening of the15th.
Checked into L&D around 7:30am. When I got there I was 2 cm. 75% effaced. I had already been in labor 6 hours. My water hadn't broken yet, but I tested + for group B strep, so I wanted to get in so they could start me on antibiotics. Labored pretty well until 1:30pm. My midwife came and broke my water and that's when the fun began! Contractions were horrible! I knew I would probablly end up with an epidural, but I wanted to go as long as I could on my own. My midwife said that it I hadn't dilated to 5 cm on my own by 4:30pm, that she wanted to start pitocin. Sure enough, I hadn't so I asked for an epi before pitocin. The epi was a miracle and I was finally able to relax.
Around 9pm, DS's heartrate was doing some crazy things. It was dipping to between 110-120 (which all through labor it was in the 160's). My midwife rushed in and made me immediately change positions. I rolled to one side and then the other until we finally found a position that worked for him.
Labored until 10:30pm, was checked and I was 10 cm and ready to push. My epi totally took the pain away but the feeling and urg to push was really intense! I pushed for an hour and his heartrate once again started going crazy. At 11:30pm, my midwife said the words I dreaded the whole day. "This baby is not coming vaginally." I was devastated. I had labored for nearly 24 hours and pushed for an hour and his head hadn't moved. He was stuck.
They immediately started prepping me for surgery and it was terrifying. Knowing that his heartrate was almost to the point of distress weighed heavily. Overall the c-section wasn't too bad, minus alot of pulling and pressure. He didn't cry when he was born and that was terrifying as well. Finally I heard him grunting and they brought him to me to see and kiss and DH went with him back to the room.
Overall, I am thankful that DS is perfect and healthy. He weighed 7lbs, 11oz (after they estimated 6 lbs). I was hospilized from Wednesday until Friday and the recovery was rough at first. It was disappointing not to be able to deliver vaginally, but I know and the dr who performed the c-section continued to tell me it was impossible for him to have been born that way b/c of his head size.
If I had any advice for anyone, even if your fully expecting to deliver vaginally, prepare yourself for the possibility of a c-section. I didn't read ANYTHING about them b/c since 30 weeks he was head down and I was sure everything would be fine.
Thanks for reading! DS is worth every ounce of pain!! People always told me that but I didn't believe them until he was here!
