Road trip with 2.5 month old twins?

Hi everyone :)

DH and I were thinking of taking a little road trip...and I was wondering...is that a crazy idea at this point? will it completely mess up their schedules? (I'm specially worried about the nights).

The trip is about a 10 hour car ride...we thought we could do it in two days...maybe leave the first day at bed time and do the first leg, and then take it easy the next day and finish up sometime in the afternoon.

They've never slept in the pack and play...so I'm wondering if they would sleep in it at all while we are there.

ALso not sure what do about bottles...should I just buy the drop ins?.  They still eat every 3 hours...so it's quite a few bottles to be worrying about washing, etc...

Also, we are in FL (VERY warm!) and would be going up to NC...so more chilly, which they're not used to...I'm assuming if I just bundle them up it should be ok, right?

We still haven't decided whether to do it or not so I thought I would ask here and see what you guys think!.

Re: Road trip with 2.5 month old twins?

  • IMO, yes, I would say go for it!! I did a 12.5 hour trip with my twins when they were 5 wks and it was awesome! They slept the majority of the time and we stopped every 3 hours for their feedings/changings(and/or if they were up for long stretches or were signaling us to take a break!, we'd stop sooner). We did 7 hours the first night then the last leg the second day.

    Tips:

    1) When you need to stop, stop at a hotel! DH would run in and ask the front desk if we could feed our twins in their lobby--it was always clean, hotel staff was friendly, and we weren't crammed into changing them at a fast food place, etc.It made our stops enjoyable and without stress of being around lots of people/ having to worry about sanitation.

    2) Drop ins might be a good idea. I didn't use those put just had a huge ziploc bag of bottles. I had a lot to wash when we arrived at our destination, but it wasn't unmanageable. I carried two travel size coolers and kept my milk on ice so that it wouldn't spoil.

    3) I EP my twins (not sure if you EBF, EP, or FF) but if you pump, I had to buckle down and do it on the road! I bought a hooter hider cover-up so 18 wheelers didn't get a crazy peep show!! Bring lots of AA batteries in case the pump needs to be recharged in the car!!

    4) As for bundling up, I would suggest getting the JJ Cole Bundle Mes--they allow you to keep the babies covered without overheating them (they zip into the infant carriers)--they have a range of warmth factors; I like the Urban Bundle Mes (wind resistant and microfleece lined) and they have Bundle Me Lites (for warmer temps). Avail. at BRU.

    5) Stock up on plastic shopping bags--I was glad I had a stash for accidents (i.e. a baby wet through her clothes, etc.) and you  also might want to get adhesive window clings--I put one up on both back seat windows since it got super sunny as we traveled and I didn't want the sun to bother them.

    6) The PNP worked awesome in a hotel room!! Compact and yet the twins seemed comfy and happy to be in it together! It fit nicely on the side of our hotel room. Easy to assemble/ disassemble and fits easily in the car (and we had tons of luggage to haul!!).

GL!! I hope you and DH have a fun road trip!!
