2nd Trimester

Would you call the ob/gyn for a headache?

I never call my Dr for anything but I've had a headache for about 13 hours now.  I took Tylenol once and it still hasn't gone away.  I took my blood pressure twice this morning and it was high for me - 126/81.  I'm usually around 105/70.  My book said to call within 24 hours for a moderate headache not going away with Tylenol.  Am I just being a worry wart?  Thanks!

Re: Would you call the ob/gyn for a headache?

  • I got awful headaches with DS & never called. Theres nothing an OB can do. mine would have just suggested 2 regular strength tyenol, heating pad or ice (for a migraine). If you are concerned about the BP though, thats different & maybe you shoudl call.

  • Have you tried a soda with caffiene?  That will usually help clear up my headaches.
  • Well a high bp can cause a headache, so if that's high for you then there's no harm in calling the doc and letting them know how you're doing.

I agree with this - I would call if you are concerned about BP, but not the headache. Over the past 3 weeks I've gotten daily headaches that tend to rear their heads in the afternoon. I've found that tylenol doens't usually help, caffiene sometimes helps, as does a nap. But some days I just have to power through. I'm working on identifying my triggers which can help: I'm trying to avoid getting overheated and low blood sugar.

Yeah, I'm going to try some caffeine.  I'm cleaning out the coffee maker as we speak.  I'll give it another couple of hours - it's probably just stress from trying to get everything done for the holiday. Thanks ladies!

  • You should call.  I had pre-e with #1, and higher BP plus and headache is something your doctor needs to know about and monitor.
  • I have been having serious headache issues and I ended up calling yesterday and they suggested 2 extra strength tylenol and 1 30mg sudafed. If it didn't work they wanted to see me. It didn't work and my headache keeps coming back so they saw me this morning and gave me a prescription for a stronger headache medicine. I'd say it couldn't hurt to call just in case it is something more serious than just the headache. GL
  • I wouldn't try caffeine like some suggested unless you want your blood pressure to go up more. ?

Call your doctor any time you are concerned. ?Better to be safe than sorry. ?Are you drinking enough water though?? ?Early in my 2nd tri I got reallllly bad headaches and I was told to increase my water intake even though I felt like I was drinking a ton already. ?Sure enough, my headaches went away. ?When they came back, I knew I wasn't drinking enough water. ?You'd be surprised at what extra water can do for all of those aches and pains!?

  • I have found that drinking lots of water helps with headaches.
  • I put in my nightguard and it usually clears up my tension headaches.  90% of headaches are muscle related, and that usually stems from the muscles of mastication (chewing, clenching, grinding) so putting space between your teeth (even biting on a pencil) should help.

I've been having very bad headaches (including the occasional migraine) and when I went to the OB yesterday my BP was very high also.  My doctor suggested two extra strength tylenol and a little bit of caffiene to help my headache, and gave me a prescription for when it gets to be too intense because when I have a migraine I cannot keep anything down for 15-20 hrs normally.  I'd call your OB if I were you.  I don't think you're being a worry wart, high bp is serious in pregnancy (I'm not saying that to freak you out, just to keep an eye on it!)... good luck and keep us updated!

  • Thanks everyone again for the advice.  I haven't been good with drinking water with this pregnancy.  I'm usually too busy chasing my son around and I forget.  I'm going to make more of an effort to drink water.  Oh, and I just rechecked my BP and it's 115/75.  I'm just going to keep an eye on it for now.

  • My doctor said that if I experienced headaches, I could take two Tylenol (for a total 1000 mg dose) twice, and if after two doses it didn't go away, call the office right away.
