Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Getting bed time earlier??

We've been doing a bedtime routine for almost a month now. We play with her on the changing table and try and get her to wiggle and we talk to her, then it's bath time where we try to get her to kick and move around a lot and we use the Johnson's lavendar wash, then we use the Johnson's lavendar lotion and change her into her PJs and then feed a bottle to her and she falls asleep. Problem is she wakes up within 30 min and no matter what time we start this routine she doesn't go to sleep until 11pm-midnight. She acts constantly hungry from 9pm on and a few nights have begged for food so much that she's thrown up from eating too much in a short period of time.

Any ideas/advice for getting her to bed any sooner at night? I know she's only 10 weeks and won't STTN if she's not ready just looking to get her to sleep between 9 and 10pm if possible....

Re: Getting bed time earlier??

  • We moved bedtime from 10:30 pm back to 8 pm, 1/2 an hour earlier every 2 days or so.

  • i don't really have any suggestions (mine is a night owl also), but you may want to ask during the day.  i think a lot of us that are on at night also have late night babies, so we may not be as much help.  sorry.  good luck!

  • I remember those days LO being up until 11pm-midnight only napping 30minutes at a time. Also the constant eating from 9pm until he fell asleep - spitting/throwing up b/c his belly was too full.  I know it's hard but it does get better within time. You are doing the right thing with creating a bedtime routine. I remember around 3.5 months he started going to bed around10pm and then when he hit 4 months he fell asleep at 7pm. It was crazy b/c it happened all of the sudden. It will happen for you soon.
  • Look for tired signals...eyes rubs, fussiness, yawns, etc. and put her down right away.  She may actually be over-tired by the time you are putting her down and that's why she's waking up after 30 minutes.  Some other other ideas...give her a bath around 8:30...try a miracle blanket (we love, love, lover ours!).  DS sleeps consistently from 6:30 p.m. to 4:30 or 5:30 a.m. without waking with the miracle blanket.  I don't that that STTN at 10 weeks is unrealistic.
  • I agree with watching for any signals. And she may want to go down earlier than you think...mine goes anywhere from 7-9 PM, but he's pretty consistently winding down and getting drowsy around 7:30 now. It seems so early...
Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.
  • when she acts hungry after she eats, have you ever offered her a pacifier? My LO only recently started wanting a pacifier to help with the sucking comfort thing. When she's fussy and difficult to get down, this helps sometimes.

  • Try reading No Cry Sleep Solution.  It explained what sleeping really is for a baby and MOST babies need to go to bed EARLY...if you miss the "window" then they will not be able to rest fully.  Watching for signals is huge!  And, it's ok to skip part of th routine if they are clearly exhausted.  Our LO doesn't STTN but he does go to bed at 6ish and sleeps until 1 a.m. and then is up at 6 and again at 8 for the day.  He's older, but we start his routine at 5 p.m. and by 6 he is out like a light.  I can't imagein him staying up until 11!!  He would be soooo cranky and exhausted.  I wonder if you just need to start everything earlier (maybe not as early as 5 - I adjusted due to signals from my LO) but as someone suggested, a half an hour a night to see if that helps.
  • Don't worry, It gets easier.  hannah went threw this phase.  Just pick a routine and stick with it.  She started wanting to go to bed earlier and earlier.
