also for the sake of conversation, nobody ever told me before i got pregnant that spotting was ok, that i would be all crampy, i would want to rip my bewbs off, or that the bloat would start this early!

the salicic acid thing i just read from another poster on here! im overwhelmed! no pepto, no herbal tea, no salicic acid, i didnt know about the lunch meat so ill add that one too! what else is there and what are the reasons for it? how did we ever make it out of the womb? they really shouldnt overwhelm newly expectant ladies with so much
Cloth diapering, VBAC, BF & FF, AP momma to two 2 and under. Special needs - DS born with clubfoot and diastrophic dysplasia (dwarfism)
Lunch meat is usually just restricted to "sliced from the deli" meats just in case the meat has been contaminated with Listeria. It can cause miscarriages, premature delivery, infection to the newborn and death to the newborn.
I'm definitely avoiding lunch meats since I found that out!
This post makes me think of the show Mad Men, where Betsy smokes and drinks while pregnant.
Should've read more before posting, haha. Yeah I think about that ALL the time. I love Mad Men and I always think about that. A lot of times I think we'd be better off with less research and more listening to your own bodies. Not that I'm about to take up smoking or get drunk anytime soon. My grandma had 5 kids, I'm pretty sure she drank her coffee, ate lunch meat and hot dogs, etc etc....and my Nana...well, I'm pretty sure she was chain smoking and drinking through all 3 pregnancies and yet they're all here...and oddly none of them drink alcohol much either. Interesting....

Things are on the restricted list because they MAY cause problems, not because they DO. You can eat soft cheese and lunch meat and drink your regular amount of coffee, but it carries a risk.
It's important to know which things have potential to be dangerous so you can decide for yourself which risks you are willing to take.
I read no pineapple or papaya. I read this the day after enjoying a nice bowl of both. I asked the Dr. at my appt. who said she had read it as well but was not sure of why it was not recommended?? What a disappointment since they both have an enzyme that helps digestion, which is really needed now!

This! I don't think the list is overkill at all. I'm GLAD I know which things are risky and which things aren't. It's only ~9months. I can live without these things for a mesley 9 months if it increases my odds of having a healthy baby.
The 'back in the day we did ____ and we're just fine' argument bugs the crap out of me. My response to that is 'yes, you're fine and you're one of the lucky ones.' Heck, I remember not wearing a seat belt when I was 6, 7, 8 years old - would I let my child not wear a seatbelt because I didn't and still turned out ok? Heck no! What kind of flawed logic is that?! My mom drank a gin & tonic everyday when she was pregnant with me and I don't appear to have suffered as a result - that doesn't mean that I'm going to liquor it up while pregnant.
I say try not to focus on all the stuff you can't do (I'm bummed about missing a season of wakeboarding for example), and instead enjoy the fact that you're pregnant. I know it feels like time is crawling by at the slowest of paces during the first tri, but you'll be done being pregnant before you know it.

I heard the opposite. That the "bad" lunch meat is the pre-packaged stuff. I was told fresh sliced deli meat is safer...
I'm being careful about things but YES I feel like some of these things are totally overkill. When our mothers were pregnant with us, they didn't have many of these restrictions, and we (most of us) turned out fine.
Actually, even with all the ridiculous things they say you can't do or eat, the restrictions are less of an inconvenience than I expected before I got pg.

I didn't know about not taking hot baths. I mean I totally understood avoiding hot tubs at hotels and such, but...my bathtub. Really?!
Still, I tested it once during my last pregnancy (because I had alot of bored time to waste). I ran a hot bath and took my temperature every five minutes. My temp went from normal to almost 100 in 15 minutes, so of course, I got out right away. I asked my doc about it, and he said that hot baths aren't okay because you can't sweat to cool yourself but hot showers are okay because you can sweat if you need to. Interesting fun facts for all the nerds.

My doc actually said that hot baths are fine... mostly because the water isn't kept hot so by the time your temp is going up, the water temp is going down..
Re: everything your not supposed to do in pregnancy that you never knew
not supposed to eat lunch meat (which i still do)

I never knew that I would want to rip DH's face off over the littlest things. Or that I can't eat lunch meat (non-heated up) lame.
Of course they are overkill, I kinda thought that was the point of the thread. Maybe I read I wrong
