TV in the nursery?

DH wants to put a small flat screen TV in the nursery for late night feedings/rocking, ect.  My brother and sister in law ended up putting one in their nursery and have gotten a lot of use out of it.  I think it would definitly be nice to have some entertainment during those long nights, but I also can't seem to get over the idea of a TV in a baby room....it just doesn't seem right.  I LOVE her nursery right now and I don't want to ruin it with a TV and DH wants to have it mounted if we decide to do it.  What do you ladies think?  Or have any of you put a TV in your nursery?

Re: TV in the nursery?

  • We went out on Black Friday and bought one for the nursery! I think its a great investment for late nights and playing baby videos/music. Good luck deciding!
  • Loading the player...
  • i refuse to have a tv in any bedroom, especially a nursery. if i want to watch something, baby and i will trek out to the living room.

  • Well, I'm not a fan of that idea, but I'm the kind of person who is pretty much against more than one TV per household.so...

  • I can see the benefits of it but, right now, we have more important things to use our money on that that.  If we find it's going to be a long night, we would just go downstairs & turn the tv on in the living room anyway.  That way we won't wake up whoever is still upstairs asleep

  • When I had my first I would have thought the same but honestly when he was first born he was in our room so any feeding at that point were done in our room, then when it was time to move him to his nursery I found the time quite nice to just be "alone" and read a book and once or twice fell asleep myself. Its a nice to have but you wouldn't miss it if it wasn't there.
  • DH totally wants to put a tv in the baby's room... but I say no.  For nightime feedings I think I would rather have it be quiet and not be concerned with flipping channels trying to find something on.
  • definitely not. I am very against a TV in any child's bedroom. I didn't have one until I was 18 and we intend to follow that rule in our household as well.
  • my feeling is if you are up for a mid-night feeding the best bet is to do it with the least amount of distraction and light.  If you are less of both it will be easier for yourself and your little one settle back down to sleep.  Also your child might get used to the sound and light of the t.v and might want it all the time.  Hope that helps. I agree.

  • I am a complete TV addict, but I will NOT be putting one in the nursery. It just doesn't make sense to me.

This!  It's one of those things that will have to wait until she gets here.  If I find I just can't live without it then I'll consider it, but I am sort of against the idea.

  • no TV's in any bedroom at our house

    I also agree with this!

  • we have a small one already that's currently in our bedroom that we're going to switch out with one of the other tv's in the house and put the little one in the nursery on top of the dresser.

  • I didn't really have a choice.  My husband took the little tv out of my office and had it mounted on up high in what will be our little girl's nursery when I came home one day.  He says if he will be up late at night with her that there will be a tv in there.
  • Never even considered it and I watch a fair amount of TV.

I do not want to even entertain the idea of TV in the nursery.  There is no such thing as educational videos for kids under 2 and if I am up in the middle of the night-- I don't want the baby to start to associate that with the light/noise etc.

Sorry this sounds harsh! That is not my intention but I really just feel like when they are so little you need to cherish just holding them, feeding them and taking them in.  I don't want to be distracted a show.

  • Nope.  There will be no tv in the baby's room.  In fact, there will be no tv in our child's room at any age.

Now, that is a very good argument... reinforces my perception that it is not a good idea

  • We originally going to get one, but our room and LR are about seven steps from LO's room so we decided we can just go to one of those. But I love the idea of having one in the nursery.

This for us too.. Babie's don't need it nor do children..+ if they are watching tv, it should be monitored by the parents anyways to that can be done in the main tv watching area!

  • Yes, there will be a tv and a mini fridge!  No joke, we want to have bottles of water and eventuallly bottles of breastmilk upstairs for easy access.  The tv is for me, not for the baby.  I don't know if I will use it a whole lot, but we'll see.

  • Don't let him do it- when she's 2 she will learn to move the furniture and climb up on it to turn on Caillou.  But.  I co sleep and did with DD, too and I keep a tv in the nursery.  As with DD#1, once co-sleeping is over, the tv comes out of the nursery. So I am with him- it's nice to have, but agree with you- not permanently.

  • we have a 15 inch that was in the guest bedroom that we are gonna hang on the wall in the nursery...its smaller than my laptop screen so I'm sure it won't be too big of an issue.
  • This is my 2cents:

1:  IMO tvs in infant/children's room make for ugly decor and ruins the look of the room

2:  Excess noises from the tv can disrupt your child's sleep and calming time.  The noise and picture from the tv can also disrupt the natural learning and will reinforce the need for noise and stimulation from an outside source instead of from your child's brain.  Think of it this way - your child is trying to sleep, but he/she's brain hears this noise or sees these images from the tv and then tries to understand it - therefore rest or learning play is not happening in your child's brain.

3:  If you are up for a nighttime feeding, and watch tv, it takes your brain at LEAST 1/2 hour to calm into sleep - even if you fall asleep right away.

4:  Did I say they look ugly?

5:  I am sure if tvs are put into infant rooms, they get used... but IMO, I would rather sing or sit in the quiet enjoying this time with my infant.  I remember doing that with my daughter when she was so little and I am glad I put all of my attention on that little face, those are times you will NEVER EVER get back, do you want to waste it away watching meaningless tv?

  • i'm not really a fan of it but than again, i didn't spend a lot of time in the nursery because we did all the feedings in the living room. but if you have the room and think your going to be in there a lot, i'd say go for it.
