Re: Holiday Traditions

  • I don't remember having any traditions growing up, which totally bums me out.  On DH's side, they always get together for cookie baking which DS participated in this year (well, as much as he could!).  We also buy new pajamas that we open on Christmas Eve so we can wear while opening presents in the morning.  Oh & we bought an Elf on a Shelf this year.  DS doesn't understand the concept yet, obviously, but I can't wait till he does.  I think that will be a fun, new tradition.  I can't think if there are any others that we do.

  • DH's entire family and extended family go over to his gma's house on Christmas Eve. I never had that growing up..... getting all of the family together so I think it is really nice.  His gma tells the story of baby Jesus being born and sets up the manger and all of the kids (which there are alot of) gets to put a piece in the manger.  And the youngest at the time, most of the time a baby, gets to put baby Jesus in.  She has a song "Happy Birthday Jesus" and all the kids hold hands and dance around the manger singing the song.  The kids just love it.  DH told me that they used to do this when he was a little kid and I think that tradition is awesome.  I get tears in my eyes every year watching it.

DH and I have started our own tradition.  We wait until the kids are asleep Christmas Eve and then we get all the presents out of the attic and wrap them.  Every year I wonder why I wait till the last minute when I'm up at 2 am still wrapping, but this year I said I want to do it again. It's kind of like our thing that we do together.

  • Both of our extended families celebrate with a big family party on Christmas Eve. We try to go to both for at least a little while. My family has a lot more history and tradition to it, but sadly, this will be the last time we'll be celebrating at my grandparents' house. My grandma passed away in 2004 and my grandpa passed away in May this year, and the house will likely be sold before next Christmas. It's really sad that the end of Christmas as we know it has come.

As for DH and I though, since he is working Christmas Day for 24 hours (and today for 24 hours), we'll be celebrating on our own when he comes home in the morning. We'll have breakfast together, exchange gifts and relax for a little while before heading to both family parties in the evening.
