XP: Ectopic Questions

So, I am having some pain on my left side and now I am all worried about this being an ectopic pregnancy.

So, if you have experienced an ectopic, when did you start feeling any symptoms that pointed you/ your RE in the direction of ectopic?  Also, what were those symptoms?

Thanks ladies - I am hoping that I am just over reacting to these pains.....

Re: XP: Ectopic Questions

  • I personally haven't.  But it seems many of the girls here that have, have had indications from the Beta #s before anything.  I think I saw your beta was high, right?  I also think the embryo is too small to cause pain this early.
    Good luck!

Yeah my beta was pretty high - it was 259 at 8dp5dt.  Ugh, the worrying never stops!

  • I had alot of pain with my 1st bfp on my right side.  It was determined to be a cyst on my ovary.

    GL!

  • I haven't had an ectopic, and I didn't do IVF (did IUI), but I had the same pains right after my betas, but on my right side.  I called the Dr. but they said it was too early for it, and I went for my first u/s at 5wks5days.  All was fine, and I just had a big cyst on my right ovary - probably what was causing the pain.  GL to you!

  • I have had an ectopic and the pain is incredibly intense, so intense that it made it difficult to function.  (Mine was not in my tube, so it wasn't a typical ectopic - I never spotted at all - but I imagine that the pain would be on the same level.)  It was some of the worst pain I've felt in my entire life.

I didn't feel a thing until I was almost six weeks.  It was also a break cycle, so I didn't have repeat betas, but I believe that my initial one was pretty low for where I should have been.

ETA: With this pregnancy I did feel those normal pains/twinges that the pp described on either side and they are NOTHING like the pain of an ectopic.  I know it's hard not to worry, but if you feel that kind of pain, you will know that it's something serious.

  • Thanks ladies!  I know I am probably reading in to this way too much!  Thanks for the reassurance!
  • how far along are you?? I had an ectopic and no pain till 6 weeks and when I did feel pain it was constant and couldnt stand at times..had some spotting too...if you are earlier than 6 weeks..too early for pain from ectopic
  • With my ectopic, my betas were low and non-doubling.  I believe the first beta was 29, then like 38 and then it did start to rise.  I never had any pain or any indication that it was ectopic, just the low and slow rising betas.  I was in beta hell for 3 weeks, waiting til I got to 7weeks to see if we could see anything on the u/s.  I never had bleeding, pain, etc.  But the u/s clearly showed a live ectopic in my tube and I did the MTX shot.

I really don't think you have anything to worry about, I know, easier said then done.  Your first beta was great.  With this BFP, I had pain on both sides, following the BFP and that's because my ovaries were so enlarged from stimming, it took forever for them to go down, and I did have small remaining cysts as well thanks to PCOS, but things have gone smoothly.  Try not to worry, I'll be thinking of you.

  • I bet you're maybe just over-worrying. I had pains on my right side - it felt a little bit like a needle poke that would come and go really fast. It didn't happen consistently at all. This happened really early in my pg. I figured out that it was normal and probably just the baby implanting more.

And, you have a high beta, but it is not outrageous that would indicate an ectopic. It's hard not to worry about everything at this point, but I am sure everything is fine!

  • I've had 3 ectopics...all different. 1st one stopped growing and i started spotting. 2nd one-no spotting/bleeding and this one got a little bigger-all of mine were caught early because of my risk...i got betas and early u/s.  I can't remember because it was 2 years ago, but probably around 6-7 weeks.  This one i  had pretty bad pains.  My 3rd was actually an ectopic twin that was caught at my 1st u/s-around 6 weeks and was removed that day.

In my case betas didn't always matter.  I'm usually pretty laid back about stuff, but in this case i say better safe than sorry.  You should be able to see something on an u/s when your beta reaches 5,000. GL!

  • I had pain on my left side and it turned out to be that giant cyst. I just felt this deep viseral pain just above my left ovary and in my back. I think I was 5 weeks at the time.

I will be praying it is not ectopic.

  • Oh no! I am sure you are fine. Can you call to have an u/s done? Thinking about you! Keep us updated!!!!!
  • I had an ectopic on a non-treatment cycle and I spotted from the beginning.  Only after had I been spotting for several days with no normal AF did I even test.  My betas looked fine.  On the day I was diagnosed, I had heavier bleeding and then started having some flank pain on my left side.  The pain was probably a lucky fluke because I wasn't even 6 weeks pg.  If I remember correctly, I think your beta has to be either 1000 or 1500 before they can see anything.  Normally I'd say that you're better safe than sorry, particularly with the holiday coming up.  However, if you're beta is still under the 1000 mark, I don't know if there is much anyone can do except wait and see.  Hopefully it's nothing and I think random twinges are pretty common after treatment.

  • I had an ectopic, but didn't feel any pain until around 7-8 weeks.  They determined it was ectopic by the slow rising betas.  Like others have said, at this point with your beta as low as it is they wouldn't be able to see anything on u/s. So it will be about seeing if your betas rise normally.  I wouldn't worry about it at this point, but good luck with your next beta.
