hey bumpies ![]()
does anyone else have high blood pressure? I'm 15 weeks today (yay!) and at my appointment yesterday the nurse who took my bp took it twice with me sitting, said nothing, just "I'm going to re check that" and then had me lay on my left side and took it again, and my bp fell to a normal range but is still elevated.
the doctor told me that if it becomes to a point where it can hurt my health they will give me blood pressure medication but right now they just want to monitor it very closely. she also told me that as of right now (just the high bp reading from yesterday, the last apt at 10w5d or something it wasn't high), i have a 5-25 percent chance of needing to be delivered early due to preeclampsia.
who knows more about preeclampsia?? where can i get good information without scaring myself to death?? (I want to hit google up but I'm afraid that I'll totally freak out...)
Does having high bp make me high risk??
I'm kinda panicking.
Re: high blood pressure @ 15 weeks... scared..
Don't get yourself worked up, yet. I know it's hard but there really is nothing you can do to stop yourself from having high BP and worrying will only make it worse. The dr will probably put you on meds first to try to control it. Don't think about pre-e, not until the dr mentions that this is what you have.
Things you can do-relax, as much as possible, try not to stress ( I tend to remove myself from a situation that is stressful to keep my bp down. My bp also causes me to have migranes so anything I can do to keep them away I do). ANYTHING you find enjoyable, such as reading a book, can actually lower you bp.
I know it's scarey, but there isn't anything you can do, and you really shouldn't worry unless the dr tells you to. If you have been under stress (hello holidays) or were nervous that will raise your bp.
Good luck, and really try not to worry.
I had high blood pressure with my daughter and now again with this one.
I did get preclampsia with my duaghter. It was okay though. They monitor me, I went in twice a week starting at 28 weeks for non stress tests. I was induced at 37 weeks due to my blood pressure but when I say it was high I mean 210 over 120 and not coming down even while laying down.
They will probably want you to do a 24 hour urine sample to give you a baseline.
I am currently on procardia XL, It is considered a class D drug but I trust my doctor and if medication is needed to keep your bloos pressure under control don't worry about the classification just know that your doctor is doing what is best for you and the baby. My meds are about to be upped for the 3rd time but my baby is growing healthy and strong with no issues.
Basically they keep an eye on the mommy to make sure your blood pressure stays as stable as possible. I would avoid salt, and caffiene, also if you can limit your stress do that. I would also pre prepared for bedrest as it could happen, I was pulled out of work at 34 weeks.
My doctors did everything possible to get me to term. My Daughter is now 3 and healthy and happy.
I know it can be scary but your doctors are monitoring you now and that is what is important that they will track your condition and make sure you are okay.
This is my DD

Awww, thank you for sharing her picture with me... that makes me feel a lot better
What would the 24 hr urine sample be for? What do they test with it?
i'm not at all opposed to bp medication (or anything my dr prescribes, really), i asked about it yesterday and they said that bp meds will not help pre-e, and that the only wway to get rid of pre-e is to deliver the baby.. which is what makes me nervous... how early does pre-e become too big of a problem to go on??
I agree with the PP's. I'd also add that if I were in your situation, I'd look into whether diet can help to manage high bp, and maybe acupuncture too. I'm a big believer in natural remedies (not anti-drug or meicine, just think we forget non-medicine treatments sometimes!) and if one or both of those could help, why not? I'm not sure if bp brought on by pg can be managed by diet, but it's worth checking out. After having an incredibly positive experience with acupuncture (I still go) I'd definitely look into that too - but look for someone with experience in fertility and pregnancy, as they will know how to care for you during pregnancy.
I wish you all the best - totally agree don't panic and hang in there.
Blood pressure can be a sign of an issue of preclampsia but preclampsia is a rapidly progressive condition characterized by high blood pressure and the presence of protein in the urine. Swelling, sudden weight gain, headaches and changes in vision are important symptoms.
I was diagonised with it with my daughter at 18 weeks because of the increase protien in my urine.
This time I am just now 16 weeks and have it again.
I would like to point out just because you have it for one pregnancy doesn't mean you will have it again in your next one (I just got lucky,
), sorry got to laugh at it you know)
Anyway the 24 hour urine will see how much protien is in your unrine and from there they will check it to see if it goes up.
Please also don't go out and google this to death, yes preeclampsia can cause death of both the mother and baby (but you don't even have it yet it is just possible) but it is when it goes undetected so it is good your doctor is being proactive now.
Also the doctor will check your kidney functions as this condition can impact your kidneys. I had troubles while pregnant but about 6 months after birth I was better again. I was cleared by a cardiologist and a high risk pregnancy OB before trying for this baby.
In my OB's pratice they usually can monitor the mother and get her to at least 34 weeks before inducing if the condition worsens.
I will say this take your doctor's advice I was pig headed and said as long as my DD was passing the non-stress tests I refused to be induced. By the time I was my condition was critical and my daughter was losing weight because the placenta was dying. I say this not to scare you but to let you know I was the worse case my doctor has seen in 15 years and yet we all came through it fine. DD was born at 5 lbs 5 ounces 19 and 1/2 inches. I should have let them take her at 35 weeks when she weighed 6 pounds 8 ounces but I had that stupid 37 week number in my head.
Just go with the flow and relax knowing you are under good care of your doctor, Also your doctor will probably do more ultrasounds to monitor the baby's growth.
I would actually recommend that you not google pre-eclampsia. My blood pressure started inching up in my third trimester and I was later diagnosed with severe pre-e. I was put on bedrest for awhile, admitted to the hospital a couple times for 24-hr urine tests, and induced at 36 weeks. The best thing I did during that pregnancy was NOT googling pre-e. There are some scary stories out there, but your doctor's job is to keep you and the baby safe and healthy. Scaring yourself will not help with your bp.
As far as your bp goes, I also recommend that you take a close look at your diet. You may want to ask your doctor about the DASH diet, which is often helpful in lowering blood pressure. Cut out extra sodium where you can - nearly all frozen and canned food have high amounts. Eat as much fresh foods as you possible can.
And if you do get diagnosed with pre-e down the road, you still have a great chance at delivering a healthy baby. My placenta was breaking down and looked very unhealthy at delivery, but my 5lb6oz son was a champ! He didn't need any medical care and caught up in size in no time. He was the height of an average 3 year old at his 2 year doctor appt.
