3rd Trimester

measuring 34 weeks when you're only 30? (long)

So i went to the midwife today and when she measured my fundal height she kinda freaked out, remeasured twice, and then asked me how far along i am. I said, i'm pretty sure i'm 30 weeks, right? She said "well that's what the chart said, and that's what i thought too.. But your uterus is measuring 34 cm. I checked 3 times. which means it has grown 5.5 cm in 2.5 weeks."

at which point i almost screamed "Are you telling me she is the measuring 4 whole weeks ahead?!"

Ann (my midwife) then laughed and said, don't flip out yet, we'll bring you back in 2 weeks and remeasure. I guess if in 2 weeks i am still measuring ahead, or i have some more rapid growth then we will do an U/S to see if it is due to massive baby or maybe extra fluid or what.

She also asked how long Dh and i were wehen we were born, and when i told her i was 23.5 in and DH was 22, she said "aw, well then she is probably just really long", and since she is nice and engaged in my pelvis her feet are just sticking way up and making my fundal height even higher.

she did ask if it would throw a wrench into our plans if Caity came a little early though, so i guess we'll see what she has to say on jan 8th. Ugh, i knew i was too massive for only 30 weeks

  • When I was measured at 30 weeks I was measuring 33 weeks.  I too was freaked out.  My midwife at the time said we will wait 2 weeks and see, if I was still measuring ahead we would book a weighting ultrasound.  I went back and at 32 weeks I was measuring 32 weeks.  Which technically means I shrunk.....But she figures it was just the posistion of the baby.  It happens a lot and I guess I should have known by the fact she wasnt worried, I shouldnt have been either.  You and baby will be fine

    Something similar happened with me.

The position of the baby can make a huge difference in how you measure.

  • I consistently measured three weeks ahead.  I did end up having dd 3.5 weeks early but thankfully everything was fine.  Not sure if one had to do with the other or not.

honestly from this info alone, i would guess your dates may have been off.

I've been measuring right on target until today, lol. I'm not really worried at this point. I just remembered i already have an U/S scheduled for the first week of jan to check her skull growth, so we'll see how she and fluid levels look then

  • I have been measuring about 6 weeks ahead at each of my last few appointments.  And I know for a fact our dates aren't off because we did IVF.  We finally had a growth u/s last week to get a better idea of how big he was going to be, and at 36w1d his head and belly were both measuring 42 weeks.  Weight wise, they estimated him to already be 9lbs 4 oz that day.  So for me, measuring ahead = huge baby.

    FET #1 = BFP on 5/2011
  • Similar here - at appt last night, MW measured me to be 33 weeks at only 28 - scheduled me for a growth u/s to make sure, so we'll see!
