Babies: 3 - 6 Months

LO and a CT scan.

Has anyone else's LO had a CT scan? We had our 4 month today and DS's head size is in the 105%. Our Doc ordered a CT to check his brain and overall development. Has your LO had this done? What can I expect? I'm not gonna lie I'm pretty nervous.

Re: LO and a CT scan.

  • natalie is going to need a CT scan or MRI. We haven't had one yet. I talked to the doctor and they said they will put the baby under for it. I think that scares me more then anything. Good luck and I hope everything is ok with your LO

  • Can't be much help on the CT Scan.  We had to do an MRI and I was a nervous mess, so I kind of know where you're coming from.  I just wanted to wish you luck and I hope all is well.
  • No experience with it, but wanted to say good luck and hope everything is okay with your LO

omg really! I know he has to fast for 12 hours before but I didn't know that. I guess that makes sense fasting for a reason. The doc just never said that. I'm getting more nervous now!

Not sure on the CT Scan but DD was given something to make her sleep for the MRI.  This is the only way they can get them to sit still and get good images.

  • CT scans only take a few second, but MRIs take a while (up to an hour sometimes) which is why babies (and most younger children) are put under anesthesia for them. Even though the CT only takes a few seconds, it is important for them to stay still- I have had babies that have done fine without anesthesia and I've had older kids that definitely couldn't handle staying still :) It all depends on your baby (and possibly the mood they are in that day!) Good luck- hope everything goes well and the only reason why his head is so big is because he is so smart! :)

If it makes you feel better, they did a twilight sleep for DD via oral medication, not a full general via IV.  She was out for the test and woke up about 5-10 minutes later.  Even when they put the pulse ox on her foot, she moved a bit so I could tell she wasn't completely under.  I do know some places do it via IV.  You can ask.  Hopefully, for the CT Scan you won't need any sleeping meds.

  • What do you mean?  DC's head is measuring in the 105 percentile?

this is what I am praying for, usually DS is very calm. He's had a bigger head since the 20 week u/s. Not sure if anyone remembers but the doc thought he was like 12-13 pounds and wanted to do a csection at 36 weeks. He was 8 lb 3 oz at birth.

My DS's head is measuring in the 105th percentile as of today. Doc said it's very big. His Height and weight are 60th percentile.

Holy cow!  That's quite a difference!

  • DD just had an MRI two weeks ago in which she had to have anesthesia because it took an hour to complete. They did an IV as soon as we arrived I would ask them if they could wrap her hands in warm diapers for about 20 minutes before they try to put in the IV (if they are going that route). I know is sounds weird but they did it at the hospital we had her MRI done in and it really helped to bring her veins up to the surface and more visible for the nurses, they got the IV in so quick that she didn't even cry. She had aa pediatric anesthesiologist with her throughout the entire procedure in case anything went wrong and she actually woke up within 10 minutes of the procedure, after being under for about an hour. They just had us feed her and make sure she didn't throw up or anything and once she was in the clear they let us go home. The nurses and MRI techs at our hospital were great and explained everything to us in detail as we were going along. I say just ask lots of questions so you are fully informed. Best of luck to you and keep us posted on what you find out.

yep! I even had a U/s the tuesday before my water broke and the tech swore he was 12+ lbs! My Water broke that Friday and my doc did a csection because she said I wouldn't be able to deliver a 12 lb baby. My csection incision is 8-9 inches long hip bone to hip bone. The little guy shocked everyone!

  • You may want to repost this during the day. Someone posted about a very similar situation earlier. It sounded like the CT was just a precaution, some babies just have big heads. You and your LO will be in my thoughts. Try not to worry too much and def stay away from google.
  • I have no experience with this, but I just want to wish you good luck and I'll be sending T&P your way.
