So here is the new update. My surgery was moved from Monday to tomorrow due to the NICU being closed on Monday. The NICU is still full at the hospital I am supposed to deliver at and they are transferring babies to their partner hospital NICU which is now also closed.
If my babies had any issues tomorrow they would transfer them to another partner hospital NICU but would not transfer me to be with them.
They said the situation would probably be the same next week since the babies that are in the NICU are in situations where they would be staying more than a month.
I cannot talk to my doc tonight and have to wait until I check in tomorrow to discuss any rescheduling if that is what we want to do.
I can reschedule to next week and be in the same predicament or just go ahead tomorrow.
I am just not sure what to do. My doc wanted to deliver me at 36 weeks due to my b/p and swelling.
Everything could be fine tomorrow with my babies and they may not need the NICU (according to ultrasound they are over 6lbs a piece and I have had the betamethazone (sp?)) or one or both could be transferred.
Any advice for me?
Re: Need some advice...surgery...
I delivered at a hospital that would not take babies earlier that 32 wks. It was an emergency c-sec so I didn't have a choice. Believe me when I tell you that you do not want to be in the hospital w/out your babies.
Is there anyways you can have the surgery at the partner hospital that has the open NICU? BTW, the weight doesn't really mean no NICU. I'm sure you know there have been many 8 pounders in the NICU for breathing problems.
GL with everything!
I would talk to your doc tomorrow and try to hold of as long as possible. You may be able to hold out another week and that could make the difference between NICU and no NICU. GL with whatever you and your doc decide.
ETA: I'd also like to add that I don't think Jacob was ready to be born even at 38w. It seemed like his rooting/sucking reflexes weren't fully developed and would've benefited from a few more days inside (of course we worked through it and he's doing perfectly fine now).
My doc does not have privileges at the hospital they would have to be transferred to so I would have to deliver at the hospital with the full NICU.
Was this just the scheduler talking to you about possibly scheduling next week... or also your doc? If your doc would be comfortable waiting until next week, then I'd probably wait it out if I was in the same situation.
I'm not sure what to tell you. I had my boys at 31 wks, one boys was in the NICU for 3 wks the other 4 wks and they still have minor issues from it. If your bp is not changing and you have no symptoms of pre-e I would recommend to wait as much as possible. I was in the hospital for 4 days w/out my boys. It was horrible, especially hearing and seeing all the babies around me.
GL!

i think you mentioned your doc doesn't have privileges at the hosp that could take both you and your babies. if i am reading that right, then can you transfer to another doc at that hosp??? maybe he is the one piece of the puzzle that is not crucial!
the reason i say that is i had to be transferred to a hosp with level 3 nicu for PT labor at 28wks. i was SO bummed (and scared) to lose my OB in the middle of a crisis (she didn't have privileges at that hosp). well, the peri who i was transferred to was fabulous, but he didn't even do my c-sect. the peri who did was also fabulous.
btw, i was told that docs CAN obtain privileges at another hosp if they REALLY want to... just keep that in mind when making a decision about you and your babies' health.
best of luck!!!
