Babies: 3 - 6 Months

5 and 1/2 month old refusing the bottle??

So DD has been on a bottle (and FF) since she was 2 months old. We never had any issues with her taking a bottle. We've always used Dr. Brown's bottles, because DD had terrible issues with gas when she was younger. They've always worked great for us.

However, on Sunday, she started getting irritable when it was time to give her a bottle. She would fight me a little on it, but after a few minutes she'd eat. It's gotten progressively worse since then, and just now she had a huge meltdown when I tried to get her to eat. I've tried different bottles, nipples, different nipple flows, sippy cups, spoon feeding (which she sort of tolerated but it was a huge mess), syringe feeding, and she freaked out after everything. She finally fell asleep after I carried her around to console her. DH and I intially thought she might be teething and that's why she didn't want to eat, but after this crying fit, I'm not so sure. I called the pedi's office and they want me to bring her in tomorrow to make sure she's not sick, but I thought I'd see if any of you ladies have had a similar experience with your LOs and what the outcome was.

She acts totally fine (not sick or any different) when it's not time to eat, but when she sees that bottle, she just freaks out.

  • Our LO would do this and we thought it was teething too. We gave him just a tiny bit of Oragel on his gum right where the tooth was coming in and then he took the bottle just fine. Many people are against Oragel but it has saved us a few times, we could see the relief when it kicked in.
  • Any chance she's stuffy?  DS started acting fussy with the bottle and I figured it can't hurt to try some saline drops and the bulb and sure enough there was mucous up there.  Afterward, he ate like a champ!
