Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Help! My baby is a CHUNK- from tiny to huge!

So we went into an appt today for LO, he was 5 # 3 oz at birth and seems to be gaining a half a pound a week right now. He is 6 weeks old and now weighs 8 lbs 10 oz!!!! O...M....G! Is this crazy? The lady said that the average for babies this age to eat is 2-3 oz per feeding, well we passed that at 3 weeks old! He eats about 4-6 oz per feeding right now...

Anyone else? Am I overfeeding him or something or is he just playing catch up since he was so little at birth??

  • Well I have a porker too then. My guy weighed 6 lbs 15 oz and today he weighed 9 lbs 5 oz. He is eating at least 4 oz every 3 to 4 hours.

  • I'm sure your pedi would say something if they were concerned.  Sounds like your little guy is just a healthy eater!

  • DD weighed in at 13 lbs at her 2 month checkup.  Unfortunately her height and weight don't match but doc said not to worry too much.  Once they become more mobile they tend to thin out more.  As long as you're not feeding him just to feed him than you should be fine.  Besides at 6 weeks I'm sure he's going through a growth spurt.

  • Aidan eats 4oz every 3-4 hours, occasionally up to 5oz and he's not quite 4 weeks. I'm sure you're feeding him fine, and he's catching up!

  • We have a chunky monkey too. I was 7lbs 6oz at birth and at his 2month appt. he came in at 13lbs 9oz!!!!!!!! He's been eating 5-6oz since he was around the same age as your LO. The pedi. wasn't worried at all though! He said how much and often he was eating was fine.  He kept reminding us that babies know how much they need.
  • my little guy is eating 4 to 6 oz at a time too sometimes a little more. he was 9 even when he was born and at 3 weeks he was over 11. my dr said he is perfectly healthy though!
  • That sounds pretty normal to me. DD was 9.5 at birth and 10 lbs at her 2 week visit.. 9.1 leaving the hospital, so that's 1/2 lb per week. Now at 2 months she's about 14 lbs...

As far as oz, I'm BF so I can't say for sure, but around 3 weeks I was half FF half BF and DD was taking 4-5 oz bottles, def. more then average. It all depends on the baby. There is a 6 week growth spurt so that could be it too. Don't stress about it :) Babies are pretty great at knowing what they need and how much.

  • at our 1 month check up the Pedi asked how much when he takes from a bottle and we said normally about 4oz she said okay he should be doing 4-5oz about now. I say your right on track. When we went for the check our LO gained 3lbs 4oz (4weeks between visits) so yea I got myself a little "tostie roll-er" .

DH shakes his belly by the way and tells him to "truffle shuffle" I so miss that movie

  • Well our little man was 5lb11oz at birth and was 10lb9.6oz at his 2 month check-up.  He moved from the 2nd to the 20th percentile for weight.  Pediatrician seemed to think it was a good thing

  • My DD's ped said babies should gain about an ounce a day.  She wasn't concerned when DD was 11lbs, 1oz at her 2 month check up.

  • DS1 was a BIG boy for the longest time. We used to call him Jabba the Hutt, lol! Like a pp said, they thin out when they get more mobile. DS was 25 lbs at 8 months old, which was in like the 99th percentile. Now at 14 months he is still 25 lbs. Hasn't gained a pound since he started really crawling everywhere.

Some babies are just bigger than others! It tends to even out :) The only reason I would worry about overfeeding is if your pedi says something.

  • That doesn't sound abnormal to me. My LO was 6lb 14oz at birth, and gained a pound a week for the first 7 weeks!

He was 13lb 15oz at his 8 week check up, and yesterday he weighed in at 14lb 12oz (at 9.5 weeks).

  • Ok ladies that makes me feel better. I was thinking he was fine until the lady today said that most babies are eating 2-3 oz. per feeding and he's eating double that! I kind of freaked out... glad to hear he isn't sounding too huge, I just want to make sure I'm not misreading his hunger cues and feeding him too much but honestly I don't think I am... I guess we'll see what they say at the next check up.
