Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Did anyone elses pedi tell them this?

DS had his four month appointment yesterday and I am annoyed by something the pedi told me.  She said that at four months he should not be waking up for a bottle in the middle of the night anymore.  If he does wake up I should let him cry!  That was something that I did not listen to.  Just wondering if anyone elses pedi told them this.

Re: Did anyone elses pedi tell them this?

  • Yes.  Pedi told me the exact same thing.  He does not need to eat in the middle of the night anymore, he should be STTN at least 12 hours, and if he wakes DO NOT pick him up, let him CIO.

I DID NOT take her advice.  He's only woken up maybe twice at night to eat since he was 8 weeks old.  And I picked him up and fed him both of those 2 times.  Follow your own instincts...it's your baby.

  • ours said he should go 8 hours at night w/o a feeding. i'm happy if he goes 4 hours lol.
  • No, but I feel for you. My DD is just starting the 4 month wakeful and waking up at around 2:30 am again. So I gave her a 4 ounce bottle the first two times and last night I gave her a 3 ounce bottle. I am going to try to wean her down each night until I don't have to pick her up to sooth her and she sleeps through the night again. I know this is hopeful thinking, but it is worth a shot. I saw a different doc in the practice a few weeks ago and he was shocked that DD was sleeping from 7:30 pm to 6 am at that point. Not too sure if I can handle getting up again every night.

  • My pedi said the same thing. I just smiled and nodded. What evs.
  • the week of my 4mo appt was when she started waking up again at night.  Most times I could rock her back to sleep.  Once I had to feed her.   This only happened 4 nights.

the pedi at my 4mo appt said it sounded like she was ready to start some solids (ie cereal) to fill her up better.   We started solids the next week and all has been fine since.   She STTN like a champ now.

  • I dont like HOW he said it but I think most peds say it at 4 months as a way to make you feel better if you are considering the option. Permission  in a way

  • mine told me i could start rice cereal to try to give ds more to eat during the day b/c he shouldn't be waking to eat 2x a night
  • Pedis really need to stop giving parenting advice.

  • DD's (old, we clearly switched) pedi told me at her ONE month check-up that we should have started giving her less and less at night to "teach" her that she doesn't need to eat at night.  Yeah, right.

Fast-forward five months to new and wonderful pedi: he said that lots of babies at 6 months are still getting up once or more a night to eat - if they're growing or hungry, the need to eat.  I'd consider switching pedi's, or at the very least, ignoring that "advice".  GL!

  • We are starting rice cereal this week.  I'm not too worried about it because he only wakes up once a night.  I just can't imagine letting him cry in the middle of the night if he is hungry!

    Word.

  • My pedi told me her 9 month baby still wakes up at nigths
  • I've been reading online that it's common for them to wake up once or twice a night until 6 months.  We are about the same place as you...once for sure, sometimes twice.

  • Nope, our pedi does not give parenting advice. She gives medical advice because that's what her job is.

OMG.  This exactly.  I don't think my older two kids slept through the night until they were over a year old.  THey only just started sleeping 12 hours since they became teenagers.  LOL

  • No because I EBF, but she did tell me that if I hold DD too much after 4mths than she'll get spoiled. ha ha.

  • Ours said to not automatically feed them.  See if they're really hungry first, or if they're just waking out of habit.  If they are waking out of habit, they should be able to get back to sleep by being rocked a little or however they usually get calmed back to sleep.  If they are hungry though, of course feed them.

At this point, DS's tummy should be big enough for him to go longer without eating.  My pedi knowing this physical development information and passing it on to me is her job as a physician.  I fail to see how it's parenting advice that she should butt out of.
