Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Here is the answer to the Physics question.

Don't go back and pick the right answer, now!

You have to balance the torque (which is equal to force times the lever arm).  We can leave gravity out of the equation because it would all cancel out anyway.

The dad weighs 80 kg and is sitting 2 m to the right of the pivot.  The torque for his side is 80*2 = 160.  The child weighs 20 kg and is sitting 4m to the left of the pivot, so her torque is 20*4 = 80.  The mom must balance this out, so her torque is 80 (160-80 = 80).  Mom weighs 60 kg, so 80/60 = 4/3 m.  She must sit to the left of the pivot to balance the see saw.

  • I posted my answer already.  I like that my made up equation worked.  I don't even remember anything about torque.  I just multiplied and added stuff together, lol.

I posted that one because it felt like something you could potentially figure out even if you never took physics, ya know?

It worked!  The only physics I had was in 11th grade from a man who had what I called "dead fish eyes."  Creepy dude.  Boring class.

  • Whoa! I guess I'm the Rhoda cuz my eyes totally just glazed over. You're awesome, Geek!
