If your water broke spontaneously...

did it take you by complete surprise?  Or did you have some sort of warning like pressure, cramping, etc.?

Just wondering because I know things go quickly for me after breaking my water... but so far it's only been the result of an induction when I was already at the hospital!  Makes me a little nervous, especially because I'm GBS-positive and will need the IV antibiotics hopefully before the girls come.

Re: If your water broke spontaneously...

  • mine never broke spontaneously with either pg --- but i can tell you that my water breaking was something i obsessed over for WEEKS when i was pg with the twins... So i know your pain :)

  • I had no warning that my water was going to break. I was 36 wk, 5 d.  It broke in the middle of the night and was like a river.
  • I had no warning at all.  Luckily for me, I was actually on the toilet when it happened.  That was at 9 at night and then I gave birth at 2:45 in the morning.  I was 33w 4d.

  • mine broke at 37 weeks to the day and no warning at all.  well i had what i felt was water trickling out when i pooped, but had a doc appt that day and they were still in huge amounts of fluid.  so i dont know if that was anything or not.  but it was a huge gush when i went to grab something on the other side of the car, i had just gotten to a play date for my daughter.

it also broke with dd, so i was sort of expecting it this time around too, but my doc said it doesnt always happen with all pgs.

my suggestion is to keep plastic bags in your car along with towels!

  • My water broke on a Sunday and I had a feeling it was going to be soon because Friday and Saturday I was feeling like I couldn't hold on much longer...and the babies were SO active...I kept saying they were just going to poke a whole in my belly and make a escape!.

    Sure enough, Sunday morning...voila! :D

  • Oh, and I was also GBS positive...

They put antibiotics on my IV and also gave the boys some (or did some sort of test) afterwards...just in case the antibiotics they gave me didn't work fast enough or something...(I can't recall what exactly they said/did..but I know they did check and may have given something to the boys afterwards!)

  • Mine broke in the middle of the night when i got up to go to the bathroom. My OB on Wednesday took one look at me & how uncomfortable & fidgety I was & predicted I'd go into labor over the weekend, and it broke Friday night. I did not have any warning though- actually before bed, MH said- ok wake me up if we have to go to the hospital, and I was like, yeah, whatever, I don't see that happening tonight (I actually felt better than I did at my appt 2 days earlier).
  • I had no warning either. I leaned forward to check an email while sitting on the ottoman and my water broke. At first I thought I was peeing my pants but I couldn't stop it. I was 34 weeks, 1 day and I was also GBS + but we didn't know it at the time b/c I wasn't tested yet. They tested me when I got to the hospital and I got the antibiotics just in case I was b/c it took 24 hours to get the results in...we got them in a little less than 24 b/c my OB knew during my emergency c-section that I was.

  • my water on baby A broke at 7:15 in the morning when I was 29w, 6d, I was turning over in bed when it happened to kiss my DH goodbye for work. WE were totally shocked, not only had I just been to the peri the day before, but my cervix after almost 10 weeks of BR had lengthened..:(
  • Thanks ladies!  Sounds like there's usually no warning. I can't stop thinking about it, mostly because every time I go to the bathroom I feel a good amount of pressure so I just sit there for a minute in case my water feels like breaking : )  I'm such a goofball!

I also worry about either my brother or parents (who live over an hour away) getting here to take our boys.  I know I'll need to get to the hospital right away, but since they're not allowing children right now, I think hubby will have to hang out with them somewhere until backup arrives... which will leave me by myself to labor for a while : (

  • No warning at all. 36w3d I was on the phone with DH when I felt a small gush and thought the incontinence had arrived. Then I stood up and flooded the carpet.

  • Mine broke spontaneously and I didn't really have any warning.  I was just really uncomfortable because of the position the babies were in.  I guess it was because our Baby A was getting ready to make her big escape.
  • With DS1 it was just a trickle.  I was in denial all day (broke around 5:00 or 7:00 in the morning and I didn't believe it was my water until about 11:00, went to the hospital around 1:00.  I had no signs that it was going to break.

I'm glad that you asked your original question.  This is something I'm been thinking about A LOT lately.  I've also been worried about what we're going to do with DS.  Do you have any friends that live nearby that you could have "on call" to come stay with your boys until your parents or brother arrive?  My mom is 1.5 hours away, so I have different plans for "back up" for almost every situation... just people I can count on until she can get here.

  • I had lots of cramping the day it broke.  I had been getting really bad cramps for 2 weeks, but that day they were bad.  I also lost my mucous plug about 6 days before.

I still was really surprised when it broke though!

I wish : (  We're new to our town so there's not anyone that I'd feel comfortable calling (esp. in the middle of the night!).  We just moved back to our home state, so it's nice because our family is A LOT closer... but hard because all of our good friends who I would feel comfortable calling live on the east coast!  My brother actually lives closer than my parents, so the plan right now is to call him first.  He's a college student though, so it's a matter of him actually getting his behind out of bed and to our house quickly : D

  • I was laying in my hospital bed... just spending the night for observation due to an odd level on one of my blood tests.  I rolled over after about an hour of falling asleep and felt this odd pop within my stomach.  I was instantly soaked... no warning what so ever.
