moms w/ babies who have reflux

what does your baby to make them feel better? After a visit in the er last wk the MD says "yup, looks like reflux but I can't officially diagnose it". We then saw his MD the next day who said "sounds like he might have reflux" but neither MD gave me anything for it.

What do you give your baby and has it helped? He's miserable and I feel awful that he feels awful!

Help!

Re: moms w/ babies who have reflux

  • Baby Zantac keeps him comfortable most of the time...it is script you will have to get from your doc. It does not lessen spit up..just makes it more comfy if they are really fussy. Try keeping him upright while feeding and at least 20 mins after feeding him. Another thing that helped was me drinking a lot of water...I am pumping...so he gets what I drink and I drink 1 coke a day in the morning. I HATE water so I would drink lemonaide, juice, etc....but now I drink water in between any sugary drink...that seemed to help. Rocking soothes him....wearing him in a sling soothes him. Goodluck! I hope this helps.

  • We keep LO vertical 20-30 mins after eating, add rice to the formula to help it stay down (he vomits regularly), burp every ounce or so,

We are also on Zantac and may be switching to previcaid...

Hmm thinking about what else we do... does he vomit or just uncomfortable?

  • The pedi gave Noah Zantac, but it doesn't seem to work as well as we hoped. He started napping more a few days after getting on it, which was great, but I can still tell he's uncomfortable at times.  A big problem is that he doesn't like the medicine, so we mix it with milk. Unfortunately he spits up so much, so some of it is spit up.  It has helped some, just not all the way which I was hoping for. Poor guy. I'd ask your dr. for a prescription. Fight for your baby--he cant find for it himself.
  • Also you can try different formula... that seems to help some LOs

  • My son had really bad reflux and we tried prevacid and one other medicine - nexium, I think...neither really seemed to help much. Then we tried prilosec (this has to be mixed by a pharmacist) and that did the trick. He still spit up a lot, but at least he wasn't uncomfortable. We also had him sleep on an incline, held him up for a while after feeding, and I watched what I ate - caffeine (I cut out chocolate for a long time) can make it worse. Good luck, I hope he feels better soon. :)
  • My DD only seems to have mild reflux so Im not sure that this will help you, but what has really helped her lessen the spit up and obvious discomfort is all feeding and sleep times on an incline, holding her upright for about 20 minutes after feedings, burping frequently during feedings, and sometimes gripe water.
