IF and OB/GYN Spec. of NKY

We should be going in the next month (maybe two depending) to meet with Dr. Gerwe to talk about next steps and finding a diagnosis on why we seem to not be able to get pg (and stay that way).  I know lots of people recommend seeing an RE and I might try to get in with Dr. Awadalla's practice b/c of the glowing recommendations, but am thinking about staying with my OBs since I really like several of them.

Has anyone facing IF stayed with OB/GYN Specialists of NKY through IF diagnosis and treatment?  Experioences?

At what point should I go to an RE; after diagnosis or before?

Just trying to get some thoughts/comments from those who have been there before as it will help us make the decision that is right for us.

Re: IF and OB/GYN Spec. of NKY

  • Daves said it all well. I personally go to Dr. Awadalla's practice. I was just like you, loved my ob.gyn and didn't want to leave.  You can absolutely get your testing and diagnosis with your ob/gyn, but one thing to keep in mind is you will have to have all of those records sent over to an RE when you see them.  For me it was much easier to have most of it done in one place.

Unfortunately your ob/gyn probably isn't going to be the place to help you get pregnant.  I think you definitely need to see an RE for that and I highly recommend Dr. Scheiber & Awadalla. I love them both :) Trust me you will love them just as much as your ob/gyn if not more. In fact I think I will miss them when I do get pregnant.  Once you get pregnant they will release you back to your ob/gyn after some monitoring. Good luck!

  • I don't use ob/gyn specialists of nky, but I am now seeing dr. awadalla. I was also unsure of when to go see an RE, or whether to stick with my ob/gyn for awhile longer to figure out the issue.  I decided to see the RE sooner rather than later and don't regret my decision.  I'm glad I did, because I'm not sure when/if my ob/gyn would have suggested DH getting tested, and DH is part of our problem.  It's up to you, and I don't think either decision is a bad one... but I'd encourage you to see the RE if your insurance will cover it... because it's their job to get to the bottom of it!

  • I don't have any personal experience with IF, but here's my "professional" opinion.  :) I work in x-ray and do HSG's all the time, both with OB's and RE's (specifically Dr. Chin).  This isn't a push to make you see Dr. Chin, but a recommendation to definitely see and RE if you're having issues.

Just from observing both sides, the OB's tend to be more relaxed about it.  As in "we can do this if you want, or we can wait...it's up to you"  Where as Dr. Chin has a plan.  "We'll test you for this...do this....scan you this day, etc. etc."  He very much wants to help you get pregnant, and I've heard nothing but good thing about him as a Dr. as well as Dr. Awadalla, but I don't have any experience with him.

  • I just went to Dr. Awadalla for the first time a few weeks ago and I really love him! I am very happy with my OB and I plan to stick with him for my routine Gyno treatments. I was DX with PCOS in 2005 and my OB did the DX in his office, but sent me to a RE for additional testing and treatment. I am happy that we went to see Dr. Awadalla, I feel like now we have a specific plan in place and we are moving in the right direction. With my OB, I agree with PP's it's more relaxed and doesn't seem to have the specific knowledge and tools to properly help.

  • Have you thought about interviewing them both? Ask your dr's what their experience is, what is their normal testing protcol etc. Keep in mind that you'll get to transfer back to your OB after you become pg. I lean towards the RE b/c they tend to keep a closer watch on you. IE, don't just pass out the clomid and call it a day.
