Babies: 3 - 6 Months

how do you put your lo down for a nap?

do you have a routine, like before bed?

do you wait till they fall asleep with you and then place them in their crib?

or do you just drop them in the crib and let them drift off on their own?

Re: how do you put your lo down for a nap?

  • I rock him every single time. I feel like he'll be big before I know it and then he won't let me. Then I go put him in his crib if it's a night. He won't nap in his crib though but will in my bed.

  • DS falls asleep at the bottle. So I burp then swaddle and put him in his bouncer. He sleeps for 1/2 hour to 2 1/2 hours. He takes 3-4 of these a day.

  • Depends. If she's cranky and I know its because she's sleepy, we'll give her a bottle in her crib and do a modified bed time routine. If she's nodding off on her own, often I'll stick her in the swing and let her drift off by herself.
  • For naps, I nurse him on the sofa and he falls asleep.  I then transfer him to the crib.  At night, I swaddle him and nurse him side-lying in our bed (we bedshare) until he falls asleep.
  • Naps were hell for us. She would fight them, until she finally passed out. About 2 weeks ago I started putting her in her crib about 1 1/2-2 hours after awake time. We swaddle, give her the paci, turn on this music thing and give her her lovey and she falls asleep in about 5 minutes.  I think naps were so hard before, because she was over tired and I was trying to rock her to sleep.

  • well i rock him now, but i want to start a routine and put him in crib & have him drift off on his own.
  • I wait for J to "look" sleepy and I place him in his crib awake and walk out.  It's the same thing for bedtime.

If he starts to cry (which he usually doesn't if I've read his cues right and he really does need a nap) then I'll go back and pat his back and leave again.  I won't pick him up unless he is totally freaking out, in which case I abandon the nap idea and I'll try again in a few hours.

So far it's worked out for us, he sleeps great for naps and at night.

  • We have no system what. so. ever. I really need to start one. She usually just falls asleep on the bottle and I lay her in whatever is closer (crib, bouncy seat, etc.)
  • Most nights I wait for the cues that she's getting tired (rubbing her eyes, yawning, getting a glazed look on her face) and I put her down in her crib when she's drowsy. I give her a kiss and tell her to call if she needs anything. She sometimes will softly babble to herself or she'll fuss a little but she usually goes to sleep soon after.

Some nights she doesn't want to sleep even though she's sleepy. If she starts to cry I pick her up and will then rock her to sleep. These nights are rare but they do happen.

  • She falls asleep nursing, or I rock her after nursing.  All her naps, she is rocked or held to sleep also.  She is a little spoiled.

  • truett takes a nap generally after his first bottle. i feed him, put him in his boppy & we play for a bit. this is usually my time so i let him watch tv for a bit while i wash dishes or gather the laundry. he's awake for about an hour while i'm doing this & will put himself down for his first nap.

he usually also puts himself down for his other naps. i know his tell-tale signs of being tired are so when he shows signs of being sleepy i lay him down independently & again, he'll fall asleep on his own

  • I either rock her and put her in her crib, or put her in her swing awake and she falls asleep.  I think when I hit the 6 month mark, I may try to get her to do it herself, however she's still my little baby and I think our rocking chair has quite a few more miles left in it
  • DS would not nap unless I rock him or put him in his swing.

  • i believe it will be a cold day in hell when DS "drifts off on his own"...lol..for naps i have to struggle hard with him and hold him tight, on his side, with a binky in and sit and rock...sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt...
