3rd Trimester

4D U/S. My doc's office acts like I'm asking

for a permission slip to electively let someone deliver my baby next week.

We're flying back to KS for Christmas, so I scheduled my 4D U/S at the same place I had one done last year with DS.  I thought it would be fun if my family could come since I've been in CA for this pregnancy.  I called my OB's office to ask for them to fax over the permission slip and I've had to talk to 3 people in her office about it already.  The conversation ended with her nurse saying, "Well, I'm going to have to talk to your doctor about this and see if it's something we can give permission for."  Indifferent

  • Its an U/S...not a freakin vag inspection!

    Goodness gracious!

  • My 3D/4D tech only requires that we bring in a previous sonogram print out as proof of being under an OB's supervision. Ask if you can substitute that for a permission slip. Really, you shouldn't need one.

I guess I didn't realize it was a big deal.  Where we moved from, most of the pregnant women I've known have gotten one.  My last OB is the one who recommended it so my family could be a part of the fun.

The nurse seemed completely befuddled, was silent for a good 10 seconds and also asked, "Will your insurance cover this?"

It's like I'm living in the 19th century here.

I suppose I may have to.  It's like my OB's office had never heard of a 4D before.

Do you think this is cause to worry?  Lol.

  • I got the 3rd degree when I got an early gender US at 20 weeks.  The US tech at my ob's office was ticked off and told me I should have gotten permission first, well they didn't require it and I didn't ask.  It's not like i get an US every week

  • Yeah, I scheduled an elective 3D/4D at 30 weeks with a place here locally and they required I get a slip signed by my OB.  So I went to my next OB's appt with the slip & my OB refused to sign it, for "liability" reasons. So I had to cancel my 3D/4D appt. Sad  I was FURIOUS, but nothing I could do about it.

Exactly.  How strange.  There are lots of women who DO get regular U/S due to problems during their pregnancies.  This will be my 3rd and final one for this pregnancy.  I had several more with DS because I consistently measured 4-5 weeks behind toward the end.

  • Wow, I've never heard of having to get permission for the 3D/4D ultrasound.

I have an appt. this Wed. with the doctor, and my elective US on the 29. I guess I better ask.

    ;/

I don't get why your regular OB would be liable for anything that happens at an elective u/s! That's just stupid to me... all a 4d u/s is that's different, is a different wand!

I dunno. . . . pretty stupid if you ask me.  I had previously had 2 sonograms at my OB's office showing a healthy baby, so it wasn't like this was my first one.  My OB's office did end up giving me another sono last week, which is great, but it wasn't a 3D/4D and she was moving so fast that I couldn't make out ANYTHING other than a foot. Lame.

  • The place that we went not only wants to know that you are under prenatal care, but also any complications you are experiencing (if any).  The elective facilities do NOT want to be the ones to find something wrong.  A sonogram image won't cut it at the place we went, but they will accept a copy of an ultrasound report (as long as it is from your anatomy scan or later).  Ask the 3D/4D place if that will work.  Your OBs office cannot refuse to provide you with a copy of your ultrasound report.
  • According to an ultrasound tech who scanned my legs for suspected blodd clots in L&D the other week, there is more recent research showing that having numerous ultrasounds could lead to ear problems in childhood.  This may be why some OBs are reluctant to "authorize/give permission for" elective ultrasounds, and why they are worried about liability.

  • I didn't need any kind of permission from my OB for our 3D.  When we went in I filled out a form stating where I received prenatal care and how far along I was.  That was it.  And it wasn't a sketchy hole-in-the-wall 3D place, it was owned and run by two of the main techs at our local hospital's Women's Center.  I guess it varies from doctor to doctor or from state to state?

  • I don't think you should be worried. My ob seemed to think that the gender determination would not be as accurate at my 3D place as it would be at a perinatologist (which gave DH hope since he wanted a boy). But the 3D tech was spot on. She wanted a slip filled out by my OB but said they would also accept a sonogram picture so they knew I wasn't just using this place in lieu of proper prenatal care. I believe they are bound to tell your ob any abnormalities they may see, as they won't tell you, and so that may be why they are requiring a signature. A mere formality that is more annoying than anything else.

  • thats just crazy.  all my place needed was a copy of the 20 wk U/S. they just need to know you are under prenatal care, and that you arent using the 3D u/s inplace of regular care.

  • I live in KC, KS and am getting my 3d/4d u/s at 29 weeks (January 9th). I was not told that I needed to bring anything, let alone a permission slip, to the u/s appointment or before. I think I'll be calling tomorrow to make sure that I am not supposed to be bringing something. Where are you getting yours done at?

  • Many OBs do not want to give permission for the 3D/4D US places as these are NOT professional places.  They are only for entertainment as you all know.  As a professional US tech, our accrediting body and most of the medical community discourages going to these places.  There is NO government regulation of these sites and often these "techs" are NOT professionally trained, anyone can do them--ANYONE.  The FDA is attempting to shut these places down permanently.  While US has had no adverse affects on baby in over 30years of being studied, the medical community only recommends US for medical purposes.  We understand that it is exciting and fun to see LO (and it totally is!!), but this is probably why your OB"s are reluctant to sign the permission form.  Sorry to upset some of you, just wanted to explain why dr's may not want to sign.
