Babies: 3 - 6 Months

How do I know when to put him down for nap?

Our little man is almost four months old, and his patterns are much different than before, when he would fall asleep on his own. It seems like after 2 hrs of awake time he gets fussy, so I try to put him down then. What do you guys do? Do you schedule them? How long does your 4 month old nap?

Re: How do I know when to put him down for nap?

  • She usually gets tired and fussy around the same times everyday. When she starts rubbing her eyes I know that is when it is time to go down. As far as how long, it depends on her mood. Saturday for example, she napped for 30 min in the morning. Sunday morning she napped 1 hr. 40 min.

  • I watch for the eye rubbing and yawning to begin.  Once it starts its off to her crib.

  • If it's been 2 hours, I put him down for a nap. The amount of time he sleeps always varies.
  • I can pretty much count on DS needing a nap between 8:45 and 9:30 am. He only naps about 30 minutes at a time. So the others are just periodically throughout the rest of the day.

  • Yawning, eye rubbing, fussy/cranky, then it's time for a nap.  He usually takes one around 9am, and another around 2pm.  Maybe a third short nap around 5pm.  He typically "cat naps" (30-45 minutes), but sometimes he'll nap up to 3 hours.  Just depends.

  • DD can typically make it between 2 and 3 hours before we need to put her down for a nap. Although she is on a pretty good schedule right now. Usually wakes up between 6:30 and 7:00, nap between 9:30 and 10:00, nap between 2:00 and 2:30, STTN beginning at 6:30-7:00 pm. Sometimes she will break her naps up and take three shorter ones throughout the day but she typically does two 1 1/2 - 2 hour naps. Has been doing this for a while now.
  • Oh and I guess I should answer your questions (LOL) she typically starts yawning a lot and rubbing her eyes. Also, her eyebrows will turn a redish color when she is tired too.
  • DD will start rubbing her eyes and yawning when she's tired.  If we are playing she will start to lose interest in what we're doing too.  She goes down between 8 and 9pm and I wake her at 5:30am when I have to work.  On my days off I let her sleep until she wakes.  Last night she went down around 9pm and slept until 9:45am this morning only waking once at 7am.  I fed her and we played until 12:30pm.  She ate again and went down and is just now waking up.  She will probably be up the rest of the afternoon until DH gets home.  She usually cat naps around 5pm and goes down for the night between 8-9.  She isn't really on a schedule.  I just take my cues from her.
  • Thanks ladies:) I guess I am doing what I should be, based on your responses:) I have been putting him down when he gets really fussy- and its not hunger or diaper- and if he doesn't want to play anymore...I get so tired of others telling me he needs to be on a schedule!!!!!
  • I know when DS is ready for a nap because he will get fussy, take long blinks, yawn and rub his eyes.  I usually wrap him in a blanket and rock him in the glider.  If he needs it, I'll give him his paci or a bottle with just a little bit in it.  I don't schedule him though... I let him nap whenever he is showing signs of being tired.  He's not quite four months yet but he will nap anywhere from 1-3 hours.  Just depends.

  • He's starting to get more regular, but in the last week or two he is definitely showing a cue...he rubs his eye when he's tired, so we know then. He also doesn't smile when you interact with him...just kind of gives a blank stare back.
Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.
