ARGH "Merry Christmas" vs "Happy Holidays"

My DH and I get printed cards each year that we send out to all friends and family. Since we have a very diverse group of friends - some are Jewish, a few are Muslim, and a few are athiest - we do not wish "Merry Christmas" on our cards, as this is a religious holiday. We usually put Happy Holidays or something of that sort, this year it said something like "Wishing you all sorts of joy this season". They are pre-printed so we can't customize them to everyone, or I would customize from for Hanukkah, Christmas, what each person celebrates, etc.

I just received a call from MIL (not answering her calls, see control freak post below) that she is angry they don't say "Merry Christmas". I am not calling her back or responding to her because I'm over it but I will see her on Christmas and I know it will come up.

I don't wish other people happy birthday on MY birthday - why would I wish someone who I know to be non Christian a "Merry Christmas"??! And who does MIL think she is calling to criticize our card? Would she have preferred I did not send one to them?!

Re: ARGH "Merry Christmas" vs "Happy Holidays"

  • I get tired of this, too... and I'm a Christian minister!  It doesn't bother me one bit when someone wishes me "Happy Holidays."  Its a non issue.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for being respectful of your loved ones and considering their beliefs along with yours.  I hope they are appreciative of that, too!

  • really, of all the things the be upset over.  How lame.
  • Thats weird she commented on it. What annoys me is how at work we can't say merry christmas to anyone and we have a holiday tree instead of a christmas tree...it's like really??? can't we just celebrate christmas if we want to!?!?

  • Good God! You didn't ask her to put something specific on her Holiday cards did you? She needs to mind her own business then. Sorry, but crazy MIL's drive me nuts. Especially since mine is certified BSC. I like to put Happy Holidays because we are saying Happy New Year too!
  • Wow. She's pissed about the cards YOU sent out?  She needs to get a life.  Sorry you have to deal with such a loon.  I'm very much a "happy holidays" sort of person since i don't want to make assumptions about which holidays people celebrate.

  • All these people who get in a huff about "happy holidays" seriously need to get a hobby or something.

  • She really has no right to be upset about cards that you sent out.

I would send her another card.  Where it says happy holidays - cross out with a magic marker and write in merry christmas.  Don't make it neat at all... LOL I would get a kick out of that (I don't know why, but I would)... LOL

  • Sounds like she is just looking for something to be upset about.

Made me spit out the milk I was drinking! Too funny, and something I would totally do!

I love that you respect other peoples feelings, very considerate of you! We are sending our out late, because hopefully we will be able to put a picture of the baby in ours...Ours says "Joy to the World" and inside a spot for the baby's photo and under that it says "Our Greatest Present".

Absolutely! DH's aunt posted her recent status on FB as "annoyed that people complain about Merry Christmas. I'm not saying happy holidays!" Way to be open-minded, lady!

  • That's ridiculous ... I totally agree ... we have a VERY diverse group of friends and family and we too always make sure that we send out Happy Holliday cards as opposed to Merry Christmas ... I wouldn't respond to her either ... I wouldn't buy into "her crazy."
  • Your MIL needs a reality check. Personally, I wouldn't even address it. It's YOUR holiday card and it says what YOU want it to say.

I was annoyed that week because we had our Winter Holiday Luncheon at work and a few of the staff replied to the evite..."is this the same day as our Christmas Party?"  UGH.  Not everyone I work with celebrates Christmas, but the ones who do cannot get passed the fact that we don't have a Christmas Party, it's a Winter Holiday Party.  They are also upset we don't have a Christmas Tree.  We chose to decorate the building with poinsettias instead.
