heating pad in L+D?

Might be the dumb question of the month for me... is there any reason you can not have an electric heating pad in L+D?  Everything I read says pack a rice pack type thing you can heat up, but I love my heating pad now and am hoping I could bring that. (I use it conservatively, 10-15 minutes at a time, nothing to harm lo)

  • I was told that I can bring one..

When I was in L&D last week, they "ordered" me one, it was a machine that filtered water into a pad... it would be much better to bring your own!

  • I know most hospitals have a policy about bring in plug in electrical devices..they usually have to be checked out by the engineering department.  That being said, I don't see why anyone would really care.  They usually do have heated blankets that you can use on your back or other places, or other devices that do similar things.
  • The hospital I work at, you can't have a heating pad without a dr order and then it has to be a hospital issued one. Might want to check with your hospital.

  • The lady at my hospital said it was fine to bring it. Just in case I can't use it, or don't want to be chained to one plug in, I bought a couple of those thermacare heat wrap thingies for the back, the ones that stay hot for like 8 hours...
