HELP! I need car buying advice ASAP!

My DH wanted to surprise me with a new minivan for Christmas... and I love him dearly for it.

But a businessman he is not and I'm afraid he we are not getting a good deal at all.

He snuck off to the dealership yesterday - I only know about the van because he had to call and ask if I wanted keyless entry or not. So the cat got let out of the bag.

Now the more questions I ask, the less and less excited I am about the price/warranty/etc. Unfortunately, DH signed the papers yesterday and they said we could come pick it up today.

My question - is the deal done? Are we stuck with this van at this price now that the papers are signed? Or can we get out of the deal if we haven't driven off the lot yet?

HELP! His heart is in the right place, but he isn't very good at getting the best deal....

  • unually dealerships have a 30day return policy. if there is something that you don't like about the car you should be able to return it but you have to get another car on their lot.

  • I know in Colorado there's a 3 day right to rescend.

Google is your friend.  Search your state's laws.

Or better yet - just call the dealership and be VERY forceful but do it ASAP and don't take "I'll have someone call you back" as an answer because they'll try to string you along until the window that you can cancel the deal passes.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • I agree with checking out the state laws, but dude, why is your DH buying a car without your sent christmas present or not?

  • Call the dealership and explain the situation. I bet they would work with you (assuming you would buy a different car from them).
  • I talked to my dh (he's in finance at a dealership), and he said your best bet is to re-negotiate with them, to see if you can get a better deal and re-write the contract. But, if they're not willing to work with you, you could be stuck. I know in CA, there's no "cooling off" period by law. If you sign the paperwork, you're stuck. Good luck!...And I hope you got the keyless entry, it's wonderful :)

  • Hmm.  I guess it does depend on your state.  Years and years ago DH and I had put money down on a vehicle and then the next day DH found out he might be losing his job.  I don't remember if we had signed any paperwork, but since we hadn't taken delivery of the vehicle yet, we were able to get out of it and get our money back.
