Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Okay.. I have to ask why..

Why would you wait to get LO dental insurance?  I have had waaaaay to many friends who's kids fell down and chipped a tooth or tripped and landed on the fireplace causing severe damage to their teeth.

Maybe my friends' kids are more accident prone than most.. but why even risk it?  Your babies are learning to walk and they have brand new teefers.  Don't they deserve to be taken care of too?

  • If she chips a tooth, won't it just fall out later anyways when she gets her big girl teeth?

  • Baby teeth fall out anyway.

    (Just kidding!)

  • I have no idea - Jackson has it all - medical, dental, vision, and life.  You never know when you will need it!

Have you ever chipped a tooth?  I have.  I would at the very least make sure that it was capped to ensure that sensitive parts were not exposed.

And are you seriously saying if Zoie chipped a tooth you wouldn't have it looked at???

No. I was joking. Hence the use of big girl teeth.

     Nobody gets me anymore.

  • That is why I went ahead and added them at 6 months. But I'm confused about what to do when their dentist doesn't accept patients until 18 months. Are there other dentists that take them early? Or early if there are special circumstances such as a chipped or knocked out tooth? Guess I should call around and not ask the Bump, huh? haha
  • The cost of the insurance available to us and what it covers isn't worth it.  We'll pay for any dental work with our HSA.

Ahhhh!  Yea, I didn't catch it.  I was actually horrified at the thought of a baby running around with a hurted toof!  :(  Waaahhhh!!

I am planning on calling a special pediatric dentist in the new year.. just in case we need to go in.  But we'll probably go in for th first appointment around 18 months - next summer.

  • we added her to vision and dental from day one! The few dollars it costs a month is well worth it, what it would cost if good forbid something should happen to an eye or her mouth.

I also didn't want to take the chance of in the future her getting denied becase the insurance company views that as a gap in coverage and considers EVERYTHING a pre-exisisting condition. Not a chance I'm willing to take!

This (except I don't have an HSA). I have private healthcare and every dental option that is presented to me is not worth it. It hardly covers anything. I pay out of pocket for my dental.
  • Accident dental is covered on our medical plan so I didn't add her for 2009 (she will have a regular dental plan for 2010). I happened to have some coverage built in so I wasn't going to pay out of pocket for a full dental plan.
  • Because her Daddy and I don't have dental insurance either.  We bought it for about six months and it cost an arm and a leg so instead we just put that money into saving so if she hurts a toofy we can pay outta pocket.  My BFF's little boys both broke a front tooth around 18 months and both of them needed to have that tooth pulled because they absessed and now they have spacers to hold the spot for a permanant tooth.  We know teeth are important, but no we don't have dental insurance.
  • Because my cousin is a pediatric dentist and will see him for free...

    Luckiest!!

But - and this is an honest question - are dr's allowed to work on their own children.. in a professional sense?  I wouldn't have a problem with it.. but I thought there was some rule against it.

Same here. It is $520 a year to add DD to my dental and I don't expect that she would need more than that before she is 18 months old this time next year. Plus, I can add money to my account tax free.

Hmm, I don't think there are rules about it, but maybe some prefer not to.  I could see if you were a surgeon or ER doctor, but a dentist is a little different, kwim?  The dentist I worked for while I was in college worked on his family/kids and I plan to as well.
