??? In regards to transitioning to sippy cup

Okay so I know I cant be the only person with this problem.  DD does great with a sippy cup when its in conjunction with juice and water...but when I try to put her formula in it - ugh...she will not take a sippy cup with formula.

Any thougths / suggestions / help - anyone?

  • Are you using a soft spout? For DD milk had to be in a totally different kind of sippy than water.

  • For us, we followed our pedi's advice, and I thought it worked well. We did a big bottle in the am and pm (to make sure DD was at least getting the nutrition) but for the rest of the day, she was ONLY offered her milk in sippies. It took a few days, maybe almost a week, but then she was on sippies exclusively for the day. That eventually led us to getting her on them morning at night, since she would take in milk during the day (so I wasn't concerned about her not drinking a full cup those other two times.) Eventually within a few weeks, she dropped bottles totally, since sippies were always in her face for the rest of the day.
  • Hmm I didnt think about this.. I will try a soft spout - but for the record I have so many damn sippys that I have tried...and here is the funny thing...DH says to me - just give her a cup - he pours some of her formula in a cup and sure enough if we supervise her - she can drink out of the damn cup!!! UGH

But the problem is I wont always have the time it take to supervise her with a cup...so I need to find a sippy cup that is going to work for her.

    So frustrating...

Same here.  DD will only drink water/juice/thin liquids from a straw sippy.  She will only drink milk from a spout sippy.

Thankfully, she'll drink either from an open cup.

I am doing this - exactly - this right now - except for her bottle of milk is at night.  I told the daycare - only sippy cups - no bottles....so hopefully within another week or so we will find the right combination of sippy cup and then we will be in business....

Honestly, not all kids go to sippy cups!  Some go straight to drinking out of a regular cup.  right now, she needs to be supervised, but in time, she'll learn how to do it and will be able to on her own.

DS hasn't taken to sippy cups very well, but he's been learning to drink out of a cup and honestly- I'm seeing progress!  he's getting better at it and less is going down his front.  I only do his at meal time when he's strapped in - but I'm thrilled that its working and if it means he doesn't need a sippy, then so be it!

This is what my husband is saying...she does really good with open cups when we supervise her and she absolutely loves drinking water from the water bottle....and she doesnt waste a drop there...

I am going to keep doing it both ways...part sippy cup during the days - and open cups when we have time to supervise her....

    Thanks ladies...

  • For the regular cup users, do you just use cups that you would use or toddler sized ones?
  • DD refused to drink milk out of a sippy for a while.  We just kept giving it to her.  She got it after a few days.

You might have to just wait it out and ONLY give her formula in the sippy....when she gets thirsty enough, she will drink out of the sippy!

You are so money and you don't even know it.
