Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Major sleep issues...Help!

A little history....DD has always been a great sleeper.  She joined our family at 8 weeks old and was STTN by 10-12 weeks old.  When she was about 6 1/2 months she started waking up 1x a night to eat (we figured growth spurt - which turned out to be true!).  The last 4 nights have been horrible.  She is sleeping very very little.  She's not fully awake and wanting to play or anything but just very uncomfortable.  She is working on cutting her second tooth so we thought that may have something to do with it.  Motrin and/or teething tablets do not help.  We thought maybe gas was an issue but Mylicon drops don't help either.  We were just at the pedi's last Monday and she doesn't have an ear infection.  She doesn't have any issues spitting up so I don't think its reflux.    DH and I have been taking different shifts being up with her but we are all starting to feel pretty ragged.

Any suggestions?  Is it just a phase or am I missing something?

  • I bet it's her teeth. Tylenol and Motrin never help Kate much either.  We use a homeopathic medicine called Camilia (recommended by our pedi) and it works wonders! She could also be getting sick...K's like that a night or two before she gets a cold.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

  • sounds like teething or developmental milestones.  no advice, just wanted to say it seems you may just have to rough it out. GL
  • this happens to us everytime S gets a new tooth as well.  You said you've used Motrin, try Tylenol.  Motrin seemed to really upset S's stomach and Tylenol seems a little more gentle.  And patience.  I know it's hard and you just need sleep, but when LO is uncomfortable, there's just not much more you can do but snuggle, snuggle, snuggle.  GL!
  • I am currently in the same situation...our LO is cutting his first tooth and this has been going on for about a month.  We also have tried motrin, tylenol, and hylands teething tablets...so far no help.  We are just roughing it out...GL!  We too are sleepy and raged!!  Our little man is getting up 3 sometimes 4 times a night now! Sleep
  • When LO was cutting his first two teeth we went through the same thing. This time he is cutting two at the same time but he seems to be doing better. We've had a few nights of little sleep but not as bad as last time.
  • Oh, and Motrin  did not work for us either. We use the Target brand infant acetaminophen and it works just as good as infant Tylenol but doesn't cost nearly as much.
  • Thanks for the reassurance ladies!  I was just afraid maybe I was missing something!  That second tooth is almost through so we are hoping it will pass!  But we were just talking yesterday about how we never thought that we would be parents this Christmas and how we would much rather be up with Abby at night then to not have her here at all.  We feel very blessed :)

  • Sounds like teeth. Grant was up several nights when he cut his two teeth at roughly the same time. He also had a cold but I imagine him being up so much during the night and being uncomfortable (unable to find a comfortable spot even in my arms) was related to the teeth.

Motrin did actually help us - prior we were try tylenol and that did nothing for him. We never did the teething tablets due to the ingredients belladonna and coffee. But, we did use baby nighttime orajel which helped A LOT - the first several times, he freaked out when putting it on the gum because of the numbing sensation, I suspect, I would immediately make some funny distracting noise and cradle him. After probably the fifth time he didn't care about it - as he knew what sensation to expect.

    Good luck
