best digital camera???

i have a canon powershot that i like...it is about 3 years old.  my complaint (that i never noticed before dd) is that it takes pics way too slow...

any suggestions for a new one?  i was looking at the nikon S640...

    Don't get the Nikon Coolpix.  It also has a slow shutterspeed so by the time it actually takes the pic, the moment has passed.Sad  I don't know about the nikon S640 though....

    I think that if you're looking for a camera to take pictures of a little one, your best bet is an SLR.  We just got the Canon Rebel and LOVE it.  It was worth the investment.

    my old pro photographer told me to turn off the redeye  in  the main menu and sure enough, faster shutter...

    P&Ss are not going to be superfast...  but I have loved my powershot and elph.  Ultimately, most recommended Cannon and Nikon to me (for both P&S and SLR) when I was looking for a new one. when looking online, cannon had better reviews.  I had/have a powershot s80 that I love, but that had been dropped too many times (the lens would just close , slide door very sensitive to touch)... but I liked how I could customize the settings on it. got some awesome pics.  I ended up getting an Elph for free and it takes nice pics... I like it b/c I can put it in my pocket, easy for on the go... but my Powershot did take better pics. I still use it on occasion.

    We have Nikon D60 and I love it. Got it about 18m ago and no complaints.

     Ditto this.  The Coolpix is AWFUL.  I've had both Coolpix and Canon Powershot and the Canon is much much better IMO.
