Babies: 9 - 12 Months

First day on 6-12 and I'm opening with what else... a SOLIDS question!

We are giving it a go for the first time tonight!  Here's what I'm wondering though... I know you're supposed to use breastmilk (I EBF) mixed with the rice cereal... do you all pump a little right before and just use that?  I hate to thaw a whole bottle just to use a tiny bit.  I'd have to dump the rest since it only lasts 24 hrs.  I'm also practically empty by the time evening rolls around and I hate to empty any out that DD will want to drink.  Or I could use water or formula, but I'm afraid she won't take to the taste then.  Any advice?

  • I don't breastfeed so I don't have any advice on that, but I just wanted to say Welcome and Happy 6 months LO!

  • I would try it with water.  That seems easier.  Then if she won't eat it you could try with bm.

  • we didn't do rice cereal since it causes constipation. you don't have to start with rice cereal just fyi. we did mushed up avocados with a little breast milk. and i pumped just a little bit right before i fed him the avocados.
  • I only did cereal three times (once a day for three days) before moving on to other stuff, so it wasn't a big deal for too long - but I defrosted the smallest bag of BM I had (I think it was 2 oz) and used that.  I didn't feel so bad about throwing out the unused part because it was only a tiny bit.

  • I would pump first thing in the morning for a couple of ounces and put that in the fridge and just use if for solid feedings, it can last upwards of a week in the fridge when it's fresh.  In the very beginning, first week or two, I literally only used about half an ounce of BM and a teaspoon or so of cereal and would still toss a lot of it the end, so a couple of ounces of milk pumped should last you a few days.  Once he got the hang of it and I started needing more milk I switched and started mixing it with baby juice (apple/pear) which also helped decrease constipation.

  • Thaw the whole bottle because most likely, if this is the first time you're trying the solid, your DD won't know what to do with it once it gets in her mouth. It'll make more of a mess than anything else, so you'll have to give her a bottle anyway to make sure she's fed.
  • We started giving DS avocado for his first food, and mixing it with a bit of formula.  It only took half an ounce or less to get to the right consistency.

Now I just mix his cereal with water.

  • I also EBF and we use formula for our cereal. We give oatmeal or barley cereal. I am afraid of rice cereal because of the risk of constipation.

This.  DS only ate a few bites the first time.

You can use water or formula though, but at 6 months you don't have to start with cereal.
