Really dry skin on LO?

I'm not sure how normal this is but LO has some super dry skin!  It's flaking off like crazy.  We've been putting lotion on 2x a day and even put petroleum jelly on his hands and feet before putting on mittens/socks.  It just seems to be getting worse.

I'm wondering if this is just normal baby dry skin after birth or if it's a reaction to something like the lotion or detergent.

Re: Really dry skin on LO?

  • its normal, i found eveno baby lotion for dry skin and i use that on DD. Works really well

  • Our LO has it too and the doctor said its normal, it is the white layer they had in the womb to protect their skin from the amniotic fluid.  It will flake off and then they will have that super baby soft skin.

    We use Vaseline and Aquaphor

  • Totally normal. You can use Aquaphor for Lansinoh especially in the creases of the feet and wrists. That is where it will be the worst.
  • It's normal for the skin to flake off.  Lotion actually makes it worse and will make the flaking take longer to complete.  It will go away much quicker if you just let it do so on its own.  Once the flaking is done, then start applying lotion again for soft, smooth baby skin.

  • Totally normal. We never put anything on our DS when he was flaking like that. He's not uncomfortable, and it will pass by about 4-6 weeks at the latest.

My doctor at the hospital, as well as our pediatrician said there's nothing you can do for it, just let it run it's course. The hosp. doc said lotion can be too harsh for their delicate skin so soon.

  • Normal! Our DD had it and it made me sad for her newborn pics because it started 6 days after she was born and went for 3 weeks or so. It doesn't matter how much lotion or baby oil you use, it doesn't help, in fact for her baby pics. people told me if you wipe a baby wipe on the skin just before it will make it look like its not there...that is a total lie, there was no way of getting around her peeling skin until it went away on it's own, but she hasn't had the problem since. Doc. says it happens to lots of babys and if baby was over due even like a day or two it's almost guarenteed it will happen.

  • Stop using lotion and just let it peel off on its own.  You can buff it a little in the bath with a soft washcloth, but otherwise just leave it alone.  Newborn skin takes a while to adapt to the dry environment outside the womb, and lotion won't help - just hinder it peeling, which is what it needs to do to come off.
