2nd Trimester

Heart Rate & Gender

I know that this is an "old wives tale"... I know. BUT I was curious if any of you had any insight on the heart rate and the sex of your baby? Also, is there a certain time frame when the heart rate speeds up or slows down? For my first u/s the heartrate started out below 140 and the past 2 times it was about. I'm now at 13 weeks.... is it still to early to think anything of the heart rate?

Re: Heart Rate & Gender

  • as the baby grows it gets faster then towards the end it slows down....i think. not sure about the gender thing. i had a slow rate and drs thought i was a boy. DH had a fast one and was thought to be a girl. at our 12 week appt baby was between 165-170.

  • to be honest with you, my doc said there isn't a lot of signifcance.  She said that she has had women with fast heart rate have boys and slow heart rates have girls and vice versa.

Unfortunately, Tthe only way to find out is to have an ultra sound.  :(

I am not sure when the supposed perfect time is, for me baby had a HB of 180 at 8 weeks and 160 at 12 weeks.

  • At 13 weeks baby was in the 150s, now she is always right around 140.  My friend is having a boy and her due date is 8 days after mine.  Our heart rates have been very similar.
  • The heartrate peaks at about 9 weeks. My baby's was 188bpm at 9 weeks, but was between 150-160bpm on my at home doppler at 13 weeks, so it slows down after 1st tri. I've been counting 130s when I do it at night the past couple weeks. It had no correlation to the sex of the baby though- many woman on here had boys with high heartrates and girls with low heartrates. My sister had both a boy and girl and their heartrates were exactly the same.

  • It was true for me. My lo's is usually in the 140's to low 150's. However my u/s are always in the morning and he is never very active in the morning so that could have something to do with it. I have a home Doppler but it doesn't tell you bpm and I don't ever count it out.
  • I don't want to know the gender but I did ask the sonographer since she see's the hb and the gender all the time and she says she has never seen a correlation. My baby's heart rate has gone from 157, to 130 and then back up to 150 so who knows
  • At my 12 week appt baby boys HR was 180. Then it dropped to 170 at my 16 week appointment. Now it ranges between 165-170 most times. I have a home doppler, and it varies quite a bit but usually stays within that range. Everyone thought I was having a girl because of the fast HR, but nope boy all the way. So there is no correlation.

  • U/S at 8w- HR 169

    U/S at 12w- HR 160

    U/S at 18W- HR 160

    Doppler HR at 20W-140

    It's a girl

  • How early was it when it was 140?  I think if it is super early then they are all on the slower side.  DS and DD(this pregnancy) were both 163 right around 12wks and then slowed down to low 150s after that.
  • peanut's HB was always very high 155-160... but peanut is a BOY  Big Smile
  • I don't think there is really a connection between the heart rate and the sex, however with that said my  DS's was in the 160's and 170's throughout my pregnancy up until delivery.  This baby's was been in the 130's and 140's and it has been confirmed twice that its a girl.
  • I've been around 150 at all my appts and I'm having a boy
