Need safety gate recs

Ok, I've put it off long enough. We need to install some gates on our staircase. It's pretty steep, and I know it's just a matter of time before a certain toddler gets more interested in it. So far, we've been lucky that she isn't too interested. We close off whatever room we're in when we're upstairs, and we're always right with her if she's near the stairs downstairs...

But anyway, both ends of the staircase have a banister on one end. So I know I'll need one of those banister kit things. The bottom of the staircase is wider than the top of it, so I'm just confused about what would work best. I assume I'll have to mount it directly to the wall on the other side at both the top and bottom--I don't think spring mount ones are good for stairs, right?

I was hoping for some recs on good gates on our kind of setup. There are so many out there, and I'm just lost (Hence why we have an almost walker and no gate--I keep putting it off!)...TIA!

Here is a pic of our stairs:

Re: Need safety gate recs

  • We use this one at the top & bottom of our stairs. it's so super sturdy & matches our wooden steps. It expands to a larger width than most so it would probably work at the bottom of your stairs too. it's expensive but we knew we would use it for years and years and it matched so nicely and wasn't just some plastic attached to the wall.

We had to mount a piece of wood (a small piece of 2x4) on the wall upstairs and on the bottom bannister to then mount the gate to since it's such a heavy/sturdy gate I didn't want it pulling off the wall or the bannister and leaving holes or ripping drywall. So this way we won't have than problem (especially since Brooks likes to stand on the gates adding more weight and pressure on the attachment sites).

If you end up getting this one and want to see pics of how we've mounted let me know!

  • Hughes, we have stairs similiar to yours ... when the wall ends there are still like 2 stairs that lead down. So we just put the gate up where the walls meet. Yes, she still climbs on those 2 stairs, but so far (knock on wood) she hasn't fallen down. I don't think falling down 2-3 stairs would be too horrific either, ya know? Just stay w/ her while she climbs them for the first few times and really "gets" how to go up and down those 2-3 stairs before the gate starts.
  • We have a similar set-up to the top of your stairs. We use this one at the top of our stairs (https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2567145) with a banister kit so we didn't have to drill into our wood (https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2967825).

We just use a tension gate at the bottom of our steps. I like it SO much better than a permanent gate (especially since it's at our front door).

Brooks plays on the bottom 2 stairs at his grandparents and he's fallen a couple times, but since it's just a couple stairs he doesn't get hurt doing that -- and he thinks he has a little freedom.

  • uncref-I'd love to see a pic if you don't mind. I think that wood would match our banisters pretty well..

    Thanks everyone!

  • Here's our Picasa Album dedicated to the gates. I had DH write a short description of each picture so you'd know a little more about it. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Wow! You're awesome--thank you!... That is a good idea. I think we could use a banister kit for the banister side, but I like the idea of mounting a 1x4 for the other side--seems like it would make it more sturdy (not sure if there is a stud or not where we'd need to mount it)... Thanks again!
