Cradle Cap?

My girls have what looks like flaky dry skin/dandruff in certain spots on their heads (behind the ears, right above their forehead, etc.) It is NOT yellow, scaly, thick, or super bad, but I also know its more than just dry skin. I've looked up cradle cap on the internet and this seems to be what it is, or at least the beginnings of it. It doesnt hurt the babies, I know, but I would like to try to clear it up or prevent it from getting worse.

I've seen all kinds of suggestions online, but have only tried the "shampooing it away" tip for fear of making it worse. Have any of you found success with any particular remedy?

Re: Cradle Cap?

  • Shampooing can actually make it worse as it can dry the scalp and just create more flakes.

What worked pretty well for us was rubbing baby oil in DS's hair. Take a bristly baby brush, and kind of scrub at it w/ oil. My friend, who didn't have baby oil on hand, used olive oil, LOL! Either way, it helped.

Ughh...see! This is why I asked, lol. When I looked it up online it suggested shampooing more often to decrease the oil on the scalp, which is thought to be the cause of the accumulation of dry/dead skin cells. Glad I asked!! Thanks for clearing that up! :o)

  • Sofia had a mild case of it.  Mustela makes a cream that I rub into her scalp after each bath.  I think it id called Stelaker.  It cleared up pretty quickly.

  • The only thing that worked for us was using Head & Shoulders on them once a week.  Just be very careful to not get it in their eyes.

  • burts bees baby oil worked for us......
  • There are a zillion remedies & all of them probably work fine...

I have used olive oil w/ pretty good success (put it on after evening bath & in the AM use a washcloth or baby brush to try to rub off the softened flakes) and also a lot of ppl use aquaphor or other types of ointment/creams. The whole point (I'm pretty sure) is just to use something nondrying to soften it so you can get the flakes off.  But like pp said, sometimes it is a little more persistent & needs special shampoos & whatnot. Hope the easier ones work for you ;)

This is what finally worked for us as well.

  • Get a soft bristle tooth brush (baby toothbrush is best) and put some original Selson Blue on it and gently brush in a circular motion on the spots, let it set for about a minute after that and wipe off with a wet wash cloth, so you don't rinse it into their eyes. This always cleared it up for my girls in 1-2 treatments.

  • It took us about 4 months to get it all gone just by brushing her head while shampooing in the shower every 2 days. By the time we had decided to try another remedy, it was practically gone so we just kept at it.
