Question from 3rd Tri: cervical scarring and delivery

Hi All!  I just had my first internal yesterday and my dr discovered that I have quite a bit of scarring from previous cervical procedures (cryotherapy and a LEEP).  She informed me that they would try to break up the scar tissue once I went into active labor and highly suggest an epidural prior to doing this (which I was already planning on!).  Did anyone else deal with this?  Were you able to have a vaginal birth?  I was just recently cleared for a vaginal delivery after having complete previa clear up at 35.5 weeks.  Thank you for any insight!!

Re: Question from 3rd Tri: cervical scarring and delivery

  • I had to have my cervix frozen 10 years ago and the doctor told me I would probably have trouble getting pregnant due to the scarring.  I got pregnant six months from when I went off of birth control and the delivery went very smoothly and I was able to have her vaginally.  I hope you are able to do the same.  I wish I had known at the time that cryotherapy causes so many problems.  I know now that they would rather do the LEEP or LETZ but I was young at the time and didn't ask many questions.

  • I had a LEEP procedure in March of 2008, scar tissue was a concern of mine too.  I did have some trouble dialating so the midwife went in and manually broke up the scar tissue after they gave me the epidural.  It wasn't bad at all and it worked, I was able to have a vaginal delivery.

    Good luck!

  • I had cryo and a laser surgery back in 2005. The scar tissue from those surgeries prevented me from dilating past a fingertip, so I ended up in a c/s.

Hopefully that won't be the case for you. GL!

  • I had a LEEP in '02 and during labor it was observed that the scar tissue was impeding dilation but in the end it was DD's position that kept me from dilating further and I ended up with a c-section after a very long labor.

  • alot of times your labor will seem stalled out until that scarring gets torn and then the labor will progress rapidly. I personally did not have this but work in L&D and this seems to be the trend.

  • I had a LEEP in '07 and wasn't dilating well, I was induced at maybe a fingertip.  She did break through the scar tissue at some point and yes, that was pretty uncomfortable (hadn't had my epi yet) but not unbearable; she broke my water at the same time.  I went through another 10 hours of labor after that but I did deliver vaginally.  I was 41w5d when he was born so I really think that scar tissue was preventing my body from going into labor on its own.

  • My doc discovered that I had some scar tissue on my cervix at my 39 weeks appt (not sure why i had scarring). I went into labor on my own at 40w4d and was contracting regularly with the help of pitocin. After about 6 hours of labor I was still only 1 cm. The doc broke up some of the scar tissue and I instantly went to 3 cm. Unfortunately my babies heartrate dropped a couple times so i ended up with an emergency c-section (i never progressed past 5cm after 15 hours of labor but my babies head was transverse in the birth canal). I think the scarring slowed down my labor but had my baby been in the right position and not had other issues i probably would have been able to deliver vaginally. I hope that all goes well for you and you get the vaginal birth you desire. GOOD LUCK!

  • Thank you so much for sharing your experiences!  This was definitely another kink in my pregnancy experience but I am extremely thankful that my Dr detected it before going into labor!!  Hopefully I will be joining you ladies before the year ends!!
