Protein in urine but normal BP?

Today at my doctor's appt. they told me I had a small amt of protein in my urine (+1). I has the same number last Friday as well. Thankfully my blood pressure has been normal the entire pg. I also don't have any swelling in the face or hands. They ordered a urinalysis to rule out a UTI and they have me doing a 24 hour urine collection Sunday. Does anyone know what they are checking for? Has this happened to anyone else?

  • I would assume they are checking for pre-e?

That's what I assumed too, but can they predict that pre-e may begin from protein in the urine? If I have protein in the urine, but my BP is never even close to high, then it can't be pre-e, right? I also wonder if there is something wrong with my kidneys. Protein can indicate a kidney infection. ugh.

  • I don't know a lot about all of the symptoms of pre-e (sorry).  I know I did end up getting it but I had high BP and no protein in my urine, my platlets dropped and they had to take the babies.  My understanding with pre-e is that you can have some of the markers but not all of them and still have it.  But you might want to Google/Bing it?

Sorry -- maybe I'm not helpful at all...I hope it's nothing and you can comfortably keep those babies baking longer Smile

  • They can get the actual specific amount of protein in your urine from a 24 hour collection (as opposed to trace/+1/+2 etc on the office dip), and they can get a good picture of your overall kidney function.
  • i don't have Pre-e but from all the stuff I have read on it, is that protien in the urine is one of the markers of it.  They are probably doing the test because if they see one marker of it, but not others (like high BP) they want to make sure its not pre-e
  • It could be a marker, I started with protein in my urine, and then started to swell, then my BP went up and ended up in the hospital overnight, then on bedrest and 4 days later they decided to do an emergency c-section because my BP just wouldn't go down...

  • I had protein in my urine at one appt. Then I never had it again. My BP was never high, I did not have pre-e and I carried my babies to 36 weeks, 3 days and then went into labor on my own. I was checked for a UTI and it was negative. My doctor said that it was probably caused by some blood in my urine, possibly from my cervix, but it was still a long time from that point before my cervix actually did anything.

  • I had protein in my urine, did 24 hr urine and was sent to the hospital to be monitored. I had no high bp, no swelling and no spots/blurry vision, but my urine levels were increasing. I ended up on hospital bedrest for a few days but since my platelets were dropping and my protein was increasing, they did an emergency c at 33.6. My protein levels were really high though. After my first 24 hr my protein was aready 900.
