Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How small do you cut your 12-15 mo. old's food?

It takes Clay freaking forever to eat, and I think it's because of my choking phobia and bites that are too teeny tiny. What would you do with, say, a slice of banana? Quarter it? Halve it? Just give your child the whole slice? Thanks.

  • he normally just holds the whole banana and takes bites off heheh

  • C eats pretty large chunks of bananas (probably half a slice) and avocado.  He eats whole blueberries and raspberries, large bites of veggie pancakes, and large bites of pancakes / waffles.
  • I'm pretty paranoid about this too because dd only has 1 tooth. Honestly, it depends on what it is.  If it's pretty soft and mushy then I cut it a little bigger.  Usually a banana I'll just slice in half.  But if it's something like, say, chicken nuggets, toast, quesadilla, etc. I cut it pretty small.

  • Most food, Jack won;t eat if it is  cut up. He is either purees or full-items.

    Purees: Most veggies/fruit but peas

Everything else: Nutrigrain bar, cookies, american cheese, pasta

  • For us, it depends on the texture of the food.  For things like avocado and pear, I cut into pieces no bigger than a penny.  For things like grilled cheese, broccoli, and pizza, I tend to cut them a little bigger.

If Noah actually ate bananas, I would cut a thick slice in half or thirds.

  • I cut bananas in quarters.  I was getting braver and started giving him bigger pieces of food but he's choked twice in the past three days and it scared the crap out of me so now he's getting teeny tiny pieces again.
  • At about 12 months, I would have cut it into quarters. Now he would get it in halves or a whole slice. I don't know really...he won't eat most real fruit for me yet!!!! Still on stinkin' purees b/c that is all he will eat for me!
  • I'm paranoid too. I cut bananas into quarters, blueberries into halves, etc. The only thing she gets whole are Mum-Mums, or if we're feeding her pieces of something we're eating, we'll let her take bites off of it.

She's sort of a haphazard eater... shoves too much into her mouth at once, then gags, several times per meal. So small pieces until she becomes a little less reckless.

  • DD's always had whole blueberries. Grapes I still cut into quarters. Bananas I've always done slices but she can take bites of a whole one & I just keep a close eye on her to make sure she doesn't take big bites. I used to tear bread up but now I can hand her a whole slice & she will tear it up herself & then eat it.
