As you can see I am still researching high chairs (now that I got my computer back) and I was wondering since Matt is starting solids at six months do we need the leaning back option?
I have the most basic high chair, and it works fine. No leaning back. When I started DS in it, he still needed propped up, but around 5-6 months he was sitting up straight. He grabs his sippy cup and tilts his head back and drinks just fine without needing the back tilted.
i didn't even know they could/do lean back. DD has been in the same position in her high chair since day 1. i don't see that being an important feature.
We just started solids and are still in the process of getting a chair. When I feed her she is usually sitting/standing in her exersaucer or sitting on DH's leg, so I would say not important when starting solids around 4 - 6 months.

i'll be the weird one to say that i really appreciate this function. i have had high chairs in the past that did not recline and it worked fine. However, since i bought this one for its ability to height adjust, I have discovered that I really like that it also reclines. It is nice because if she is ever so slightly reclined it is easier for her to eat and not spit it up. Also, when we are having a long family dinner if she falls asleep at the table i can just put it in full recline position for her after dinner catnap so i can continue lingering with my family post-meal. So, is it important - probably not, but it is certainly convenient.

Hmm, I would have said don't worry about that feature at all, but now I'm thinking that maybe that's just because I never had it!
Re: How important is leaning back in a high chair?
DS 3.12.08
DD 7.11.09
