Baby so gassy and uncomfortable after formula...is it safe to switch?

My LO is so miserable and uncomfortable after formula the past few days,,,crying and kicking his arms and legs. We are on Similiac early advance..i asked my ped if we should switch (i have a sample of the soy formula) and she said no and that the gassiness was normal?!

Anyone else have better luck with something else?

  • Can you try burping half way through the bottle instead of at the end?

And Mylicon drops can go right in the bottle - pretty sure you can use those from birth?

  • Mylicon works better for us if you give it directly, not in the bottle.  That way you know they get it all.

We were using Enfamil Premium and switched to Enfamil Gentlease to help with gas.  This has definitely helped with his gas.  We didn't ask the pedi.  Sometimes you just have to use your mommy powers and do it yourself.

  • We just switched one of our daughters to soy formula.  The other daughter is doing fine on the similac advance.  Did you ask you ped why they didn't want you to switch?  I agree that some gassiness may happen, but if our lo is as uncomfortable as mine was then that is not normal.  While I do not condone not listening to your doctor something i learned quickly with my older boys was that there are certain times that we need to trust ourselves as moms.

  • We switched from Similac Advance to Similac Sensitive due to gas issues, as well.  It has given us a whole different baby :)

The soy is a non-milk based formula and can cause nutrient deficiencies, according to my pedi- and shouldn't be used unless absolutely necessary.

I would recommend switching to Similac Sensitive to see if that works.

  • My baby was on similiac early advance too and was screaming after feedings, I switched her without asking the pedi. And she started feeling better immediately. Oh and the early advance made her constipated, and when we switched she became regular again. We had asked the pedi about the constipation, and she said it was "normal" as long as it didn't last more than 3 days, but I didn't consider her screaming normal, I switched to soy, and I now have a happy baby :)

  • We just went through this with our baby girl.

We were to the point of having to add gas drops to evry bottle, which still didn't help completly, plus it made her poop really really runny Sad

We were using Similac Advanced Earlyshield, but we finally switched to Similac Sensitive for Gas and Fussiness...it's still a milk-based formula, but is lactose free I think. Holy cow what a difference! Within one bottle we had a whole new baby. She is so happy, and is sleeping soooo much better!

  • We used Similac Advance (with the shield) for a day and a half and I will NEVER go back to it. Piper did NOT do well on it at all. She is such a chill, relaxed baby but that day and a half she screamed bloody murder. My poor girl.

We switched her to Enfamil Premium and she is doing fantastic. No gas, no constipation, no tummy trouble. So glad we made the switch.

  • I switched him on my own and just let the pedi know about it at our last visit.

  • we started on enfamil and switched the similac sensitive in the hospital because she wouldn't eat more than a couple of ml and was throwing up after every bottle. she immediately started eating more and stopped throwing up. she's much happier and rarely spits up or has gas.
  • I don't see a problem with switching.

I supplement and DD was gassy on Similac Advance. I switched her to the Target brand and she's totally fine with that. I would try a different formula before trying soy or sensitive formula (in which the first ingredient is corn syrup solids. I would just prefer to use something else if I could. Though DD1 was on the sensitive stuff once I weaned her from BF, it wasn't my first choice).
