We conceived our fraternal twins spontaneously, and have been saying that there is no history of twins in our family. My MIL and mom were talking this week and my MIL said that her uncle was a fraternal twin, so that's where the twins are coming from. My mom - who is a nurse agrees with her!
I keep telling both of them that there would be nothing in DH's little swimmers that would have been able to make my ovaries release another egg, making the family history of fraternal twins on DH's side a moot point. I don't really care if there is a family history or not, as it doen't matter to me how we got our little blessings, but it's really annoying me that they are insisting that I'm wrong. LOL
Am I? Could a family history of fraternal twins on DH's side possibly be responsible for our fraternal twins?
Re: Please correct me if I'm wrong...
you are 100% correct. Your DH's sperm has NOTHING to do with you having fraternal twins.
If you had ID twins- there are some theories out there that say a man's sperm can influence that... it being more inclined to split an egg (super powerful sperm, lol)... but fraternal - no.
That being said- there is also no real way to know 100% that your twins are fraternal until they are born... unless they are b/g. sometimes placentas fuse and look like one. People CAN know they have ID twins before birth b/c of one sac, etc... but if they tell you they are fraternal, there is a chance they are ID (if they are the same sex). You'd need DNA testing - or if their blood types are different at birth (like my boy's are) then you'd know, too.
If you have a daughter - she could inherit the ability to drop 2 eggs from her father - and have twins... that is why they say it "skips a generation"... though, in your case- she'd also inherit that ability from you, too
Goldie nailed it.
His sperm are not powerful enough to coax an extra egg from your ovary.
Thank you Goldie, I was beginning to think I was crazy!
We don't know the sexes yet, but our doctor said that based on our ultrasounds, the sacs are pretty far apart, indicating that there isn't a great chance of them being di di ID twins. She said that in di di twins, the membrane seperating them is usually much thinner and whispy. But of course we won't know for sure (unless they are b/g) until birth.

I think that unless you're having or have had twins, it's just hard to keep the facts straight.
I was even watching an episode of "The Doctors" a while back about these triplet sisters who were all pregnant at the same time. They were doing u/s on them to see if any were having multiples and actually said "because they run on your side AND your husband's side" to one of them. BTW... the triplets were identical too ; )
