Babies: 9 - 12 Months

no more rear facing car seat?? HELP!

DS is 18lbs, and growing out of his infant seat FAST...it only holds up to 21 lbs and he is stuffed in there as it is. I need to get a new one-looking for recommendations please!

Also...I am wondering if I HAVE to turn him facing forward now??? I thought it was safer to keep him facing rear, but a friend pointed out that once they get too big/tall, their feet will touch/hit the seat and it is not comfortable?? I just assumed he would be facing rear for a while...isn't it safer?

Thanks for your help in advance ! :)

  • No, no, no don't turn them around til at least 1 year old.

  • They can stay rear-facing into their toddler years.

They learn to cross their legs/put their legs up, to the side, etc.

The risks of a car accident and the injuries that could be sustained are better for the legs than the neck, KWIM?

  • Your friend does not know what she is talking about. My 36.5" tall 2.5 year old is still RF. Perfectly fine. See the links in my siggy for more info.

I have 4 Britax Marathons, 2 Roundabouts and a Costco Secerna. The Roundabouts are too small.

  • first of all your friend is an idiot.  Secondly, even if you follow the 'guidelines' the baby must be AT LEAST ONE YEARS OLD, which clearly your child is not even close to.     You should really do some research-- a baby should remain rear-facing as long as possible (Think two years minimum)... they can sit cross legged if they have to-- they get used to it, and it's MUCH safer
  • No do not forward face him now - you need a convertable car seat which will allow him to RF longer - up to 35 lbs on most.  The AAP is considering revising the recommendation to RF longer then the current recomendation of 20lbs and 1 yr.

Please read this article - https://www.car-safety.org/rearface.html

  • Noo... I am keeping DS rear facing until at least 2 years old.  Get a convertible and keep him rear facing until at least a year.  You are correct in the fact that it is safer.

  • No, a child MUST remain rear facing until a minimum of 12 months AND 20 (sometimes 22) lbs.

You need a convertible car seat. Please look at the link in my sig for info on which seats might work best for you.

  • The Evenflo Triumph got the highest reviews by consumer reports in the over  5-40+ lbs category.  The car seat goes up to 50 lbs, I think.  We just got it and we are happy with it. We also have the new Britax Marathon Click.  If I had read consumer reports before buying the Britax, we would have gotten 2 Truimphs.

And yes, definately keep him rear facing, our pedi recommends until 2.

  • Thank goodness...I am planning on keeping him facing rear for as long as possible then. Any other recomendations would be much appreciated. Right now we have the Chicco system, and were really happy with it...looking for a convertible one now...

Where are there links in your sig?

OP, get a convertible that rear faces then forward faces.  You must, by law, keep your child RF til they are 20 pounds AND at least 1 year of age, though it is much safer for them to RF for as long as the weight or height limit on your child's seat allows.  Check out the links in emiliemadison's siggy, she's got all the info.

  • I heard the Evenflow Triumph got the same consumer reports rating as the Britax and it's like 1/3 of the cost.

And yes, you should keep them rear facing for as long as possible. At LEAST a year, but longer is better.
