2 eggs one baby?

I got my U/S and I'm confused we saw 2 eggs pumping way normal but we only saw one baby not that I'm complaining but just confused why both eggs are going and doing their job but only 1 sack and a heathy baby is this normal? I go in a couple of weeks to see my OB but I thought I would ask here and see if anyone has been through this? Thanks (sorry if it sounds dumb)

Re: 2 eggs one baby?

  • We saw 2 eggs but one one fetus she said both eggs were there and throwing out their hormones (that how she described it to us) but one baby with a HR of 182bpm we never heard the hb but we saw it. Am I making sense? I'm sorry I'm just REALLY confused.

  • ok I was just confused she saw that 2 eggs had been released but only found one baby and searched for another but we couldn't find a twin but said that both eggs had been there and were doing their jobbut i'm guessing it nnever got fertilized. Wouldn't the second eggs dissapear?
  • Were you doing some kind of fertility treatment where they were monitoring how many follicles you had? Were there two follicles?

If that is the case, it just means that either only one egg was released and it fertilized and implanted, or two eggs were released and only one fertilized and/or implanted.

  • If she SAW 2 eggs and then you got pg and there is onlly one baby - that means one did not fertilize or implant ---- just as it happens each month you don't get pg - the egg just disappears or is expelled from the body (it's so tiny you'd never know).

you can easily have 2 eggs and only one baby... some women have many eggs and NO babies.

perhaps the doc saw the corpus luteum- which is what is left over AFTER ovulation- but even still - it's all very strange - she's either not explaining things well to you- or you are not conveying the message well to us.  Either way- you are pg - and with one baby- congrats!

  • No treatment and I'm sorry you guys are correct in saying follicles she referred to them as "eggs" which would be why I was confused. But she did say I ovulated twice and maybe that is why she checked for twins. She just kept saying "eggs" and thats what was throwing us off. Thank you and I'm sorry If it was a dumb question she explained it to us a$$ backwards!
  • You guys explained it much better than her! Thank you very much.
  • Maybe she meant that you have two sacs? Sometimes a blighted ovum will occur. This means that the egg fertilized and implanted but the embryo did not develop. On u/s you would see the sac but would not see a heartbeat. Maybe thats where the word egg was used. Had the embryo developed, you would be pg with fraternal twins. I hope you get some clarification at your next appt. Congrats on your pg!!
  • your doctor sounds like an idiot.
  • That is very confusing! I have no idea what your doctor was trying to say!

  • I think that she must have meant 2 follicles but then I was thinking did she maybe use the word yolk sac & you got that confused as being eggs?

Either way, hope your pregnancy continues to be healthy!

This post is just allllll scrambled..... (LOL. Sorry. Had to do it.)

this is a bit much, and a bit rude.  Read the post again....this is the US tech, not her dr - which she sees "in a couple weeks."

  • I'm with Goldie, I'll be she saw two corpus luteum cysts and knew you released two eggs, so she wanted to make sure how many babies actually developed. I expect she was using terms she thought would be easier to understand, but she really should just use the correct terms and either explain them better or let people look them up on their own later. What she did just causes unnecessary confusion for patients!
