Babies: 0 - 3 Months

BFers and bottles.

When did you start a bottle?  Lactation consultant said we could start one at 3-4 weeks once a day.  What info were you given?

Re: BFers and bottles.

  • Our pedi had us start one a day beginning yesterday (after his 10 day appointment and making sure he was back to his birth weight).  We've tried two different kinds of bottles now and DS has taken them both well which is nice as I have to go back to work in a few months.

  • We weren't told anything... but we first gave a bottle at 5 weeks.  Since then, he's had two more.  He's done fine each time.
  • In the hospital.  My baby was a non-latcher.  He started latching at about 4 months.
  • I was told between 2 and 4 weeks, once BFing was "firmly established". DD caught on pretty quickly, and my supply is good, so we went ahead and started the bottle at 2w.
  • It depends on how well your baby is BFing and how soon you are going back to work.  If BFing is well established and you are going back to work at 6 weeks, you should start bottles around 2 weeks.  If you are going back at 12 weeks, you need to start giving them by 3 or 4 weeks.  Kind of a fine line to walk.  You don't want to do it too early because they could have nipple confusion but if you wait too long, they may refuse a bottle.

  • We gave him a bottle the night we came home from the hospital because had to suppliment some. He also used a nipple shield the first 3 weeks. He never had any nipple confusion but every baby is differen't.
