how many bottles??

I plan to breastfeed and introduce a bottle w/ breast milk starting around 4 weeks so DH can help with nighttime feedings.  Will also be going back to work after 3 months so will need to send bottles of breastmilk to daycare.  How many bottles of each size (4 oz, 8 oz) should I have?  I got some packages of each at my shower, and then a Dr. Brown's gift set that includes 4 4oz and 6 8oz bottles with an assortment of nipples...it's really nice, but I won't keep it if I end up with way too many bottles.  Including the gift set I have 10 4oz and 8 8oz bottles.  Appreciate any insight!

  • one of my friends said to get lots of bottles (at least for a day or two) since you have several feedings a day and probably don't want to be constantly cleaning them fully each time.  she just used the 4 oz ones at the beginning, but if you want to conserve on bottles, you would just need the 8 oz ones and fill with less for when your LO is still little.
  • I would personally skip the 4oz bottles-you can always put 4-6-8oz in a 8oz bottle.   I think Dr Brown's are a pain in the a$$ to clean.

I think playtex drop in bottles are the way to go--easy to go/clean.  As far as a number....wait till LO is establised w/ one specific bottle nipple then buy at least 4 8oz.  One for home, 2 to rotate at daycare and a back-up

  • 10 4 oz bottles does seem like a lot for that size, but, as another poster said, you might want to wait until after LO arrives to see what nipple they prefer.  You might have a preference as well.  Sometimes, when breastfeeding and bottle feeding, LO is picky about the nipple (gets nipple confusion).
  • I would skip the 4 oz ones because it doesn't take long for them to want more than 4 oz..As far as how many bottles you need, I would plan to have at least 8 bottles..if you end up not BF as much, you will need that many to get through 1 day and if you mostly BF, 8 should get you through 2 days..

  •  We skipped the 4 oz size because we can't use them as long. I recommend you buy enough for baby to have one bottle every 3 hours while you're apart for at least 2 days.
