Trying to Get Pregnant

Metformin...and Holiday Celebrations

Ok...so for any of you ladies on Metformin, what's the take on drinking? I know it says to limit alcohol consumption, and honestly, since starting the meds, my desire to even have a drink had gone away...but what I"m thinking is, over the several holiday functions and dinners, is it ok to have a drink or two? I know it says to just limit alcohol, but a glass or two of wine every day over an almost full week...too much?? What are your thoughts?

  • You should probably ask your dr.

  • It's fine to have a few drinks, but be careful.  Your GI might not be very kind to you, especially if you're combining alcohol, Christmas cookies, turkey dinner, etc.  You might want to have some pepto on hand in case the Met makes the pooper overactive.

This. I found that in addition to messing with my belly, certain drinks just made me feel icky, like dizzy and buzzed way faster than normal. You kinda just have to feel it out, you will learn what you can handle.

You should probably ask your dr.
Asking the doctor does nothing for her getting everyone's personal experiences. Doctors can tell you all different things, it's better to get tips from people who've been there.
  • Thanks for the advice ladies!! I guess there's no other way than to cautiously experiment and see what works and what doesn't. I guess it'll be a tough job...performing an experiement with wine. Smile

  • I find that I either get tipsy faster than I should, or I can not get tipsy at all. Just feel it out. I am not a big drinker at all but over the 4 years that I have been on metformin, I have gotten pretty smashed a few times and nothing bad happened. I normally just feel icky for a few days after. Not like hungover for days, just overall icky. It will not kill you but keeping in mind that metformin is a drug that regulates your insulin and alcohol is a sugar that has to be processed, it might be different drinking than it was before you were on it.

  • I find that met doesn't like me to have more than 1 glass of wine, maybe 2 if I'm not eating anything too carby.  I had 4 at a work party last night and didn't like what happened when I woke up this morning!

  • I think everyone reacts differently, so you definitely have to figure out your own limits.  Like pps have said, I don't even really want to drink anymore.  Which is a HUGE change for me.

I've found that I tolerate champagne and some hard a drinks much better than wine.  White wine does not set well with me at all.  For some reason, since I started Met, I've had a craving for Margaritas when I do drink.  But only one.

Yeah...totally the same thing happened to me! I used to be a 1 or 2 glasses a night kind of girl...when I was preparing dinner, I'd pour myself a glass of red...so was kind of concerned when I started Met...but pretty much as soon as I started taking it, the thought of drinking totally turned me off...hmmm...I will give the champagne a whirl,t hen...thanks for the tips.
