WDYT: Blowing your nose in the office?

A coworker was just saying to me how awful it is for someone to blow their nose in an open-plan office setting (like we have). I don't even notice it, however, I would probably want to crawl out of my skin if I hear someone sniffling all afternoon, so I'd rather they blow their nose every 15 - 20 minutes. As long as the tissues are being thrown out and it's not every five minutes I don't care.

WDYT - gross and rude or acceptable as long as it's not every few minutes and the tissues are properly disposed of?

  • wtf are they supposed to do-- go outside every time?

  • The only time, IMO, when it's gross or rude is while eating a meal.

Apparently they should use the restroom.

  • I have allergies and a 9 week long sinus infection. I blow my nose 5-10 times an hour. I can't leave my office to go blow blow my nose so others can suck it. Rude, whatever, I can't help it. I do take meds too.
  • I agree, I'd rather have someone blow their nose than sniffle all freaking day.  It's acceptable in my book as long as they don't have a pile of used tissues sitting on their desk or anything.

  • Sometimes you just can't help it. I have allergies and keep tissues and hand sanitizer at my desk. I'm not getting up every 2 minutes to go to the restroom. I may as well have stayed home if that was the case.

This. We have a guy who does this 50% of the time and then spends the other 50% trying to cough up what he sniffled in. yuck.

  • I hate blowing my nose when it's dead quiet, but sometimes you've just got to do what you've got to do.  Now the sniffling... I think I'd wing a stapler at someone's head if I had to hear that all day.

  • I had a coworker once who used to twirl tissues and shove them up her nose, take them out and repeat while talking to you.  That was crossing the line IMO.

Blowing your nose is fine as long as you dispose of the tissues and don't leave them laying around.
