With Sophia, we moved up to the Playtex medium flow when she started taking forever to finish a bottle. I'm thinking it may have been around 3 months old. She did really well. We moved her up to the high flow nipple by the time she was 6 months.
We also went up to the next flow when it seemed to be taking DS a really long time to finish them. You will know right away if DC is ready, they will either do really well or not be able to really drink out of the bottle.
I changed to level 2 a little after 3 months. He was also taking a long time to finish a bottle. If you think they are ready, give it a try. If they start to choke then they are not ready.
DS has been on stage 2 nipples his whole life, and we don't plan to move up anytime soon.
I didn't want to waste money on 4 oz. bottles, but I didn't realize the 9 oz. bottles I bought had stage 2 rather than stage 1 nipples. He'd cough every now and then when he was younger, but he didn't really have any problem with the stage 2 nips.
We're keeping him on stage 2 because I BF. Don't want him getting the food faster from the bottle than it comes out of the faucet, then potentially developing a preference for the bottle.
Cole is still on Stage 1. You never *have* to move up a flow. Cole still downs his bottles pretty quickly, so I have no plans to move him up unless he gets frustrated with it.
Re: Nipples on bottles
How old is your LO and are you BF or FF?
