Babies: 3 - 6 Months

How cold is too cold to take baby for a walk?

DH insists that DD get some "fresh air," but it's really cold here! Right now it's -13 C (or 8 degrees F for you Americans!). I loved taking her for walks earlier in the fall, but now it just seems too cold for a little baby.  I would obviously bundle DD up, but her face would be exposed (and if I covered it this would defeat the purpose of fresh air, no)?

  • It's 19 degrees here today and I didn't even want to take her out to go to my mom's! I think anything below 35 F is too cold for a walk.

  • I agree 35 degrees is my limit as well. Your DH has lost his marbles. lol

  • I'd say anything below 32 F is too cold to take a walk for the sake of walking.  But, we have to go out today and it's pretty cold.  DH's department is having its holiday party and everyone will be really upset if we miss it, so I'll be dressing the girls up, bundling them up, and taking the 15 minute walk there this afternoon.  I thought about not going, but realized that if I were a working Mom and dropping the kids off at daycare we would be walking there every morning regardless of the weather.

  • I live in far northern Minnesota and want to get out to do some cross country skiing and snow shoeing this winter and we decided we would take LO out if it was in the upper 20's and no wind. Just bundle them up and put some vaseline on their face for some protection. If it was 8 degrees, no I would not be taking my LO out.

  • Meh.  It was around 0F here for a few weeks and M and still went on our walks and he went with me to do chores.  I bundle him in the carrier inside my coat.  He's fine, pedi said cold weather was a fact of life and it was no problem as long as I used common sense.   He enjoys it and we stay out maybe 20-30 mins.   We've had no problems, he's still a happy, healthy boy.  I don't know that he really *needs* the fresh air, but me and the dogs certainly do and he's content joining us.

  • Personally I would only walk at 0/-1 at the coldest... do you put your baby in the stroller? have a plastic rain/weather cover for it? that way she'll get some air but not too much cold

  • My pedi said it's fine to take LO for walks in the cold as long as he/she is bundled up the same way you would be, if not maybe a little more.
  • fwiw dh's mother told me that when they used to live in canada that the dr told her bundle dh up and take him outside for 5 mins for fresh air, even when it was cold.  i don't take ds for walks when it is below 40 here.
  • Cold weather is a fact of life here and we would all go nuts if we stayed inside anytime it dipped below zero.  It was in the -15/-20 range last week and we went out almost everyday.

Bundle that baby up and go enjoy a 20 minute walk.  I wouldn't walk for an hour like we did in summer - but a few minutes outside will be good for both of you.

  • If it's too cold for me, it's too cold for her---that's my measure. Generally, I won't take a walk outside if it's colder than 20. But I put LO in a sweatsuit & hat, then put her in the Moby so she gets some of my body heat. I put my coat over us both and zip it up to my neck, so the air she breathes is heat a bit from me. It works.
