Question? Birth control patch...

Okay so I had my six week check up today. I decided that I wanted to change from the pill (which I've been taking for 8 years) to something new. So my doctor gave me some of the patch samples to try and a perscription for it. Question I should have asked but didn't. Can someone answer them for me.

I haven't had a period yet since giving birth (c-section) 7 weeks ago. Do I need to wait till I have one to start this? Does it matter what day of the week I start it? I know I can put it in one of 4 places, I don't want to put it on my abdomen due to my incision line, is there a place that worked out better for everyone who is or has taken it?

TIA

Re: Question? Birth control patch...

  • Wait until the Sunday after you start your period.  Then replace it every Sunday for 3 weeks.  No patch during week 4.  At least those were my instructions when I was on the patch.

I usually put mine on on my lower back and switched sides every week.

  • My pharmacist told me I could put it on even though I haven't had my period yet, and that I wouldn't get a full period yet - only spotting... which I thought was strange. They usually recommend Sunday, as most people will remember that, but I chose Fridays instead (it doesn't matter, as long as you always put it on the same day of the week). She said I could put it almost anywhere, just not the breasts... I put it on my butt this past week, but my pants kept ripping it off, so I'm going to try the under side of my arm this coming week (I've only had them a week).
  • I have nothing to add to your question, but thought I would chime in because I was deciding between the patch and Nuvaring and went with the ring.  I have had it in for nearly two weeks now and - wow - not having to think about birth control at all for three weeks at a time is amazing.  You cannot feel it at ALL and obviously can't see it.  So, just thought I would throw that out there as an option in case the patch doesn't do it for ya.

I'd call and ask.Does it matter what day of the week I start it? There should be directions in the pack, but you are supposed to start either on the first day of your period, or the Sunday after your period starts. Whichever you want. I know I can put it in one of 4 places, I don't want to put it on my abdomen due to my incision line, is there a place that worked out better for everyone who is or has taken it? I found my butt or my shoulder blade worked best. Arm was stupid and people can see, and abdomen I found it got in the way and I noticed it more. I switched the shoulder or butt cheek I stuck it on each week, because usually when I took the patch off the skin would be quite red there.

A couple tips--the edges of the patch get dirty with fuzz from clothes and such. You can clean it off with a wash cloth and the patch will still stick. If you forget, you take off the patch at the end of the week and have like a black square of lint where the patch was. LOL.

If it falls off, just replace with a new one asap. no biggie-keep the same schedule for changing your patch. I wore it for almost 3 years and maybe had 2 or 3 fall off and those were after I had been in a hot tub or jacuzzi a lot.
